Hi, ive been reading all the exhaust threads about mufflers lately and was wondering if anybody has any sound clips of a fm 40 or a fm 50 with everything else stock. If not can anybody describe what it sounds like?? I want a loud low sound but really wanna avoid anything ricer like.
Thanks
loud to loud for a fact. www.mbrp.com has a very nice and heavy ss unit with 4 inches out in either dual or single check out the sport truck listing to see it
That looks awesome but is a bit more that im willing to pay, any other ideas? And when you say loud how loud do you mean? Im still leaning toward either the fm 40 or 50.
it's loud. plus to get a good sound out of a v10 is near impossible due to the 72 degs of the fireing order.it's not a nice even tone like a v8's 90 degs, it's more ricer like then any thing else. so it's realy more the plusescauseing the tone problem then any thing else .those make it hard to find a good sounding muffler. for a flow master i would use a big block series like a 50 or 70. not a 2 baffle race muffler like the 40 and small 50, i have a 70 on mine and it's still loud under full throttle
i have sound clips in my web site. i have a 40 series on mine and is nice and mellow. well i guess the BANKS headers have something to do with that too. check them out! www.team-mudd-racing.com

LOUD in the V10 is BAD loud. There's no way to get a great 'muscle car/V8' sound from the V10. I know what you're chasing but it can't be had. Best bet is to go with a FM 70, or maybe a FM 50. The V10's firing order just isn't conducive to a loud muffler. It lets too much bad tones out along with the good. Best sound will be turbine-like or Indy car-like. The louder the muffler the worse your exhaust tone will be. Worse yet a loud muffler will resonate your right out of your cab @1800-2000 rpm. No kidding, you'll want to stick your head in a burning barrel of oil after a couple hours at 65 mph. I heard 1 V10 once with a nice sound, I think it was dual FM 70's with long exhaust tips (they do make a difference). I love big inch V8 motors and the sounds they make. But we just can't duplicate that sound. I read the other day that the new Audi V10 (aka Lamborghini Gallardo) has #2 cylinder header tube piped in way down stream of the rest of the exhaust to improve the tonal quality. But it still aint no V8. Which is OK for me, I like the V10 sound, but once you make it louder you get bad loud, along with loud.
Well im lost, i honestly dont know what to do. I want something louder but you guys tell me that loud is bad. And now im scared that if i get a new muffler it will sound like crap and ill have to switch to the stock one again and be out of 100 bucks. I really really dont wanna waste any money and this whole muffler deal is just kinda a big gamble whether or not you like the sound and from what people say it doesnt look good. So im not sure if i wanna risk 100 bucks or more when im not guaranteed something ill like. Any advice would help, thanks!
Well. mine sounds pretty good with a cat and nothing more than pipe and a tip. My Aero-turbine was louder on my 99 Sub. I did not do this mod, the previous owner did. It stays pretty quiet under 2000 rpm, but when you gun it, WOW!
I have a FM40 in place of the stock muffler. I left the factory up and over the rear axle in place and put on a nice 4" Magnaflow SS tip. I love the sound of my truck. It doesnt sound like my old 460s sounded but its nice. The guy at the muffler shop tried to talk me outta this set up, he said V10s dont sound good with Flow masters. When he was done he said it was the first one that sounded good.

Sorry, wasn't trying to wig you out. Here's a suggestion that I pulled from this web-site. Have your muffler guy have 4 or 5 different mufflers available when you go in. Remove the stock muffler in a way that if it need be, your exhaust guy can weld it back up. Then have him clamp different models on 1 at a time. You rev the engine and listen, then trade places with the muffler guy, let him rev it while you listen.
You should be able to pick a nice sounding muffler this way while not paying for something you will hate later. I ordered mine from a catalog, when it got here I could look right through it. The V10 needs a chambered muffler to kill some of the drone, and knock down most the '4 cyl Honda' sounds while preserving the deeper rumble of a big-inch american engine. Ken
'99 2V V10 with accufab TB, K&N filter, and catback flow50 3chamber. 95K miles and runs like new. Heres a sound clip for yea...my truck....hope you enjoy. Nothing else around sounds like me. Under load its awesome.
At cruising (65-70) its barely noticable. Actualy i only notice it just slightly when i let off the gas, and it rumbles. Half the time i forget it an scratch my head wondering what it is....lol. Now if im pulling a load and im out of overdrive it has a nice tone, but nothing i would call loud. I still remember my '65 stang with dual 12 inch glasspacks...that was a sound to hear. Oh and my baby boy (4mo) ZANE loves the sound, puts em to sleep every time.
