I hope you can help or refer me to someone. I have a 1993 Ford F-250 4x4 that recently had the transfer case rebuiltand that suppossedly went well. The problem is the dash light for the 4x4 light and 4x4 Lo don't come on when the lever is put in 4H or 4 L and the front drive shaft still turns in 2H. The manual hubs are in the free range ( I jacked up the front to make sure they were free). I removed the front drive shaft and the output shaft still turns. The guy at the tranny place doesn't know what the problem is and I don't really want to spend the money at a Ford dealer. Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
I hope you can get your money back. You paid him to rebuild it, and now he doesn't know what's wrong? I'd leave it parked blocking his driveway until he returned every penny I paid him, but that's just me.
It's pretty clear to me he screwed something up. It's anyone's guess what he did wrong.
Not sure i would go off on the rebuilder just yet. My buddy just stopped over yesterday with a ford truck that has the same problem. He disconnected the battery and the lights went off but not they will not turn back on which means it is not shifting at all now.
My guess is there is something wrong in the electrical motor that is causing the problems. With out being at the shop I can not look up the info you need that may help ya but as soon as I hear of a fix I will try to reply to this post.
andym, thank you for the reply. I should have clarified the post. They replaced the chain and sprocket(?) in the tc. It was stuck in 4wd b4 the chain went. I should have taken it to a 4x4 shop but he was right down the street and, oh hell.
RTM thank you for the reply. Had my sweetie shift the lever from 2H to 4H while I was under truck. Linkage seems to work fine and I seem to hear the fork(s) moving in the tc. Put trans and tc in neutral and truck coasts. Guy at trans shop had friend w/ Ford code reader come by his shop when he did the tc chain and got no bad codes. If you can look in elec. forum I posted something about the 4wd indicator switch. Thanx
shut the truck off. put the parking brake on. put the shifter in 2 wheel drive. unlock front hubs. get under truck, and try to turn the front drive shaft. if you can spin it, then it is not in gear. allot of times the front drive shaft will spin while driving with the t-case in 2 wheel. it is nothing to worry about if the shaft will free spin with the case in 2 wheel while parked.
as for the dash light, it is possible the bulb is bad.
Thanks tjc transport. Seeing I have the fr. driveshaft off, I did what you said with a semi-large screwdriver and the front output shaft won't turn. As to the dash lite, I grounded the plug to the case and the 4x4 lite came on the dash. Hope it's the switch. Thank you for your help!
ok.if the t-case is in 2 wheel, and the front will not turn, then you have a problem.maybe when he put the t-case back together, he did not line the shifter fork up or something like that.
