I am brand new to the Ford-Truck website and just acquired my first Ford Truck last week, a 2006 F-250 with the 6.0 liter turbo-diesel. I am an engineer by profession and am taking a graduate level engineering class this summer. Last night my Professor said in class that farmers that she knew bought diesel in bulk and used it in their equipment and trucks to save money. I informed the class that off-road diesel was illegal to use on-road and was tinted red to differentiate it from the taxed version. I was asked how anyone (the authorities) would know if a non-commercial (private) vehicle was in compliance or not. I did not have an answer and hoped I might find one here. Any information on this?
if they check they would find out, they just stick a stick into the tank and pull it out and look.
the fines are huge!
that being said, i never have had anyone inquire about my fuel, i think its just assumed that normal poeple use legal fuel, BUT....i know there are agricualture and livestock inspection stations, they may take a look into the tank of the truck.
also, if a truck is in a wreck and the fuel tank is ruptured, that could be trouble to seeing red fuel spill all over out of someone's truck.
I've known of the DOT hanging around livestock sale barns to check for such things. They also have been known to sit at the entrance to mines to check and to check on road jobs. I've never known of a personal vehicle to get caught, but hang around a job site or livestock barn and it happens. I knew of a guy getting caught in Tennessee after he had a wreck. The fine was $10,000.
My little brother got T-boned by a cop a couple of years ago and leaked red fuel all over the road. The highway patrol were sprinkling kitty litter on it and telling everyone to stand back in case the GASOLINE caught fire and blew up!
Ohio fuel taxes support both highway and water improvements for boaters. Fuel checks are random on commercial, private vehicles and pleasure craft.
Any person that consumes dyed diesel fuel in the operation of a motor vehicle on the public highways or waters within the boundaries of this state is subject to a penalty of one thousand dollars or ten dollars per gallon of the vehicle's fuel supply tank capacity, whichever is greater.
I was told here in Ohio that if you are caught using the untaxed diesel fuel, that no matter how much fuel is in the tank at the present time, you will be charged either $5,000 or %10,000 per gallon of fuel to the maximum capacity of the tank. So basically, if you had 3 gallons of the untaxed fuel in a 40 gallon tank and you got caught, you got charged for all 40 gallons. I wouldn't risk it.
Haha. I actually live around the Marysville/Raymond/West Mansfield area. West Mansfield is actually a small podunk town between Marysville and Bellefontaine.
I just put on a locking gas cap ,there is no way I would submit to anyone searching my vehicals fuel tank without a warrent ,IF i chose to run red dye it's my problem if i get caught, but why not save some money if you can, it's not like we dont pay enough taxes
like dmv fees ,traffic fines, and state taxes .
just my 2 cents.
Yes actually they did check. I was there. They didn't check our school bus though haha. They probably knew better.
Cabinetmaker, I'm with ya 100% as far as taxes being high and I'm all for saving money, but you're taking advantage of the break that farmers get. To put this into terms that are more understandable, if we all paid our dues to go to a country club, yet some city-fied fella comes walkin in not having to pay, wouldn't that upset ya? I know it's hard to understand what I'm saying, but the rest of us have to pay taxes on fuel. Not trying to start a war here, just stating my opinion.
had a horse on 10 acres = lots of BIG tax breaks local, county, fed
planted a tomato plant once = you guessed it, more tax breaks
used to carry a bail of hay (hard to find now) = yep more breaks
No no no lets not start a flame war. But you are right albran, there are numerous ways to get tax breaks, other than using illegal fuel. So before this thread gets closed down due to political discussion I think we had better just end it here in terms of talking about taxes/government. Normally it's tough to keep a calm discussion if the Gov't is involved haha.
I think the main point here is that it's not worth risking saving $.50 a gallon using farm fuel to get an enormous fine when/if you get caught.
I agree. The savings get pretty costly if you get caught.
There are other ways to save $ 20.00 a week.
I do light ranching in East Texas and the "red" fuel depot is right down the road. My ranching neighbor keeps 100 gals in his portable fuel tank. Neither one of us would ever dream of putting the red stuff in our trucks as spot checks are numerous when the price of diesel goes up.
