Ignition problem?

I was driving my '86 F150 yesterday when it just shut off....luckily i was by a friends house and made it to driveway. Anyhow...smoke came from the steering column just by the key...and now when i turn the key to start....i have no power in truck at all...and it doesnt even attempt to crank. What might be the problem?

Shorted out burnt wire (s) on the ignition switch.

Disconnect the battery !

Then get down and look around the switch.

Somebody could of spiced a wire (perhaps wanted a stereo or fog lights) and the wire is touching metal, which could of pop a fuse to the ignition circuit, or (which is unlikely..) the electrical Ignition Switch shorted out. (Its under the dash, on the top portion of the column and has a rod connected to it from the Key ignition switch) If the smoke came from the top portion of the horn pad, the turn signal switch COULD) be shorted but its unlikely it would'nt cause it to start. So the BEST solution at this point is to disconnect the battery and do a look around under the dash to see whats is burned (if its wires you smelled, you'll find it soon enough)

Thanks a bunch. I figured out why it wouldnt start....but the smoke is indeed from the turn signal switch.
