Hey guys, I'm new to the board and just got my first F1. It's a 1948 with a 425 buick nailhead in it and a turbo 400 trans. I just got started redoing the brakes and figured I'd pull some leaves out to lower it like I've read on here. The bottom 4 leaves were cracked on one side of the rears so I just used the top 4 for both rears, I'm going to try and use every other one on the fronts. I'll finally get to my question: does anyone know where I can get some caster shims? I cant seem to find them for a 48. Also, did you guys with a half leaf stack get longer threaded u bolts or use washers for spacers?
Thanks
Welcome aboard. Sounds like you have a neat truck. I broke the bottom leaves on the back of my F-1 and removed just as you did. I bought some generic aluminum caster shims at a local 4-wheel drive shop. Good luck with the truck.
Welcome to the group from a fellow 48 F-1 owner. Lots of great info on this site Where in NJ are you at? I grew up in Butler before moving to CO in '79.
Welcome aboard and congrats on the F1 purchase. Check with a local truck or spring shop if you have one for shorter custom U-bolts. They are not expensive.
Welcome to the board! Its always good to have another Bonus Built truck on here. When you get a chance get some pictures posted. There is nothing we like more than checking out what the other guy has. Your truck sounds pretty cool. Its always cool to see an interesting engine swap, the nailhead is a cool engine and I've always thought one would be cool in our trucks.
I'd check the local spring and suspension shops, I was able to get all the spring bushings, pins, etc and have my springs rebuilt for a reasonable price.
Thanks for the advice guys. I've always driven old fords, but this is my first truck, and this board is going to make it a lot easier putting this heap together! I'll try and set up a gallery as soon as I take some pics.
-rhopper, I'm from teaneck, about 30 min south of butler.
That place sells everything! I think I'll need 1 3/4" wide for the fronts and 2" for the rears, and they dont have 1 3/4 in square. I'll call the guy from ebay and get them custom made i guess. Thanks guys.
