Iam restoring a 1971 ford F100 4x4 . the speedometer driven gear is missing and i am having trouble locating one . im not sure how to determine what trans , axle, or ratio is in my truck . The id tag says the trans is type (a) and the axel is type (08) . does any one know what these would be or if the vin number would tell me.
If you find out where to get these gears PLEASE let me know. I have had no luck and have been looking for one for my '65 F-350 with the NP435. (It is supposed to have a 5.13 rear to match the 16 tooth gear, but it actually has a 4.88 which needs the 15 tooth). Ford says they are NLA.

1. There are actually two gears involved. One is the speedo drive gear which mounts to the output shaft inside the tranny; the other gear is the speedo driven gear which is attached to the tranny end of the speedo cable. These two gears must be matched for both tranny and the rear-end ratio as Charles eludes to. There are literally dozens of combinations for the various models and combos used on the 64/72 trucks.
2. I don't think you will have much luck locating one of these until you can identify the part numbers involved;
For a nominal charge, I will research the part numbers you need to find the correct two gears for your 64/72 F-series.[BR]

Thanks for the post, Stock Man. I got the p/n directly out of my '65 Parts Catalog, which shows the -D 16 tooth for 5.13 and the -C 15 tooth for 4.88... Tires are 32.5" tall (same as the 7.50-16 that were original equipment). Think they are 215-85R16 but might be 235, I really don't recall, but they are the same height as a 7.50-16, according to Dunlop.
Do you know where to get speedo gears? I even called a speedo shop but they don't have them.
