I have an 1980 f-150 and and 86'f-150. Both are lifted modified trucks, and everyone knows the TTB systems are unbelieveably unforgiving when it comes to front end alignment and streeing geometery. My question is, is there a way for me to check chamber and caster angles myself and if so what is the proceedure?
I've seen a device that is basically a spirit level you can hold up to the rim and read the camber (of couse you need level ground to park on), it seems to be aimed at the club racers who want to make changes trackside. For the range of camber these trucks like, you can durn near just stand back and look and tell if it is in range. A good method to tell if it is set right is take tire temp readings with one of those infrared spot pyrometers. The temp should be the same all the way across the tire... for example hot on the outer edge, you got to much positive.
No ideas on caster for the DIY, other than if your steering doesn't recenter by itself, you don't have any, lol.
Good advice. If you can't see the alignment being off with your eyes, don't worry about it. What you have to worry about with the TTB is the toe being off, which will wear your tires funny.
Thanks for the info guys. The truck does not completely self center. If I point it in a direction it will continue that arc unless I center it my self. Well I guess I will take it in for an aligment, it has adjustable aftermarket camber/caster bushings.
