I have a 1987 F-350 diesel dually with a C6 automatic, a gear vender over-underdrive unit and a banks sidewinder turbo. I was backing up and lost reverse and when I put it in Park it makes a grinding noise and stops (the grinding noise, the truck is parked). I have a 1990 F-350 dually with a 7.3 non-turbo diesel that I was going to but a turbo onto, but everyone told me the trans would be trashed, it has a E4OD in it. I was wondering if I should replace the C6, which is supposed to be bulletproof, with a E4OD? I want it to pull a 5th wheel and a rock dump trailer. The 1987 smokes when it first starts, but clears up preety fast. I was going to sell the 1990, but it has a fairly new engine in it and I think I'd loose my backside. I want good MPG, but I don't want to worry about ny trans going South. What would you all do? I'm not loaded with cash, if I was I'd have a newer truck maybe. Is their anything I can do that would increase power to these trucks? Thanks and God Bless, John
The C6 is pretty easy or from what others have said. I have done C4 trannys but have yet to tackling a C6 but plan to in a week or so for a fellow Bronco buddy. Depending on what you want to spend on the rebuild kit the cost of doing it your self will be around $100 or more.
A shop may charge anywhere from $300 to $600 for the rebuild. To rebuild an E4OD trans will run well over $1500 and as high as $3000.
I picked up a manual that has step by step instructions on how to over haul several different trannys. I picked it up at a swap meet for $20. It's paid for it's self already. So give it a shot. Worse case is you have to take it to a tranny shop in pieces.
I've never heard of anyone paying less than $2500 for an E4OD rebuild. The C6 is a better transmission by far than the E4OD. I would never consider doing that swap, especially since you already have the overdrive unit.
Thanks for info!!!! My 1990 F-350 seems to run less Rpms than the oC6 with the over/underdrive unit, is that to be expected? Where might I find a Manuel to rebuild the C6? Someone on here built their C6 with heavy duty stuff, where can I find it? Thanks for info and God Bless, John
The guy you want to talk to is Rob. His username on here is monsterbaby, and he knows C6 trannies inside and out. PM him and ask him - he's also a real nice guy.
redo the c6 it's a bigger unit to start with.plus as others have said you have the gearvenders that you would loose.
you can do a c6 your self it's not a hard unit all you have to be sure of is it being fully clean before it goes back together. lots of cleaner and air cleaning all the pressure passages out. try www.levelten.com, i can help you out with all the parts you will need in 3 stages of power handling ability. please understand the web site is under construction and not every thing is listed yet. but we do have all the parts in stock save what ever tc you may want to useif you want some thing like different stall speed , we build them special that takes a day or 2 extra.
