Looking at the underside of our Bronco, the pan on the E4OD sticks down really far, at least as far as the transfer case. I'm really nervous about taking it down any rough trails. One rock into that pan, and it's all over. Is there an aftermarket pan that doesn't sit so low? Do you guys fab a skid plate for it? Ditch it and swap in a ZF?
Edit: my friend wheels his E4OD in the mud and he lets it cool down a good bit in between runs. He's destroyed it once, had it rebuilt... then destroyed his engine (302), then his next engine (351W). He is ready for a C6 or ZF. I would be too, I hate E4OD's and 4R100's
I've got the E4OD in both my 95 powerstroke and in my old 93 F-150 as well as my dad's 96 F-150. They're all still going and all have over 200k on them! I don't like them because of the sloppy shifts, and never really have wheeled them hard per se, but they will take some abuse.
As of right now I've got two ZF trannies bought. One for my powerstroke and the other for my 150.
4R100's are much better than E4OD's from the factory and both can be built to handle a ton of HP and torque, but it costs like 5 grand to get them built at Brian's Truck Stop...
For that kind of money you can easily buy a ZF 5 speed, all the parts to convert, and a super nice clutch as well and be all set.
yup wheeled the E4OD for a couple years and it held up... however a stout skidplate is needed. also, you HAVE to find a way to keep it cool. an alternate radiator/fan to keep the tranny fluid cool. you cannot have too much fluid, lol
sorry but E4OD's SUCK in powerstrokes! i've seen more of them busted internally than i can count on both my hands
