Winches

i've got an 87' Ranger and I'm just about ready to slap on a winch but I'm not sure what I really need. I'm not going to be doing a lot of difficult off-roading, but I want it there if I really need it. Also, is there a brand that anyone has had more luck with than other brands? What sort of problems do people usually run into in using a winch? What sorts of accessories would I need to purchase? Please give any other information that you might know of. Thanks

Try to get a new one since it's important that nothing be overly worn out on them. The cable and the motor need to be in excellent shape.

Take a look at "Warn Industries" web site for good products related to winching. They're one of the best if not THE best. They have various sizes of winches, mounts and other parts for off roading.

NOt trying to hijack this thread, but what about a winch bumper for an 04? I can only find universal bracketry, and that's not what I want. And I'm not really a big fan of the tube bumpers that prerunner truck have. thanks

I had a "ProZap" winch bumper on my '91. It was well made. Don't know what the new models look like. The web site basically only gives you a phone number, but here it is: Prozap web site

Dave, James Duff has winch bumpers for rangers, not sure about the years, but at least up to 97. I don't think to much as changed since 93.

If your going for a winch, get a class 3 tow hitch for the front of your truck, then get a warn which with the tow hitch kit. it is easy to install, and you can leave it at home when your not mudding or offroading. that will save you some gas and cash.

For a new kit, Warn could likely be the way to go because their Combo Kit Winch Mount is specifically designed to work with older-model vehicles. It also inlcudes grille and brush guards. Check out our Winch research guide for some more insight.

I have a Mile Marker 8000 lb winch on my 90 Bronco II. I purchased it from Summit. It was quite a bit cheaper than Warn or Ramsey. Im sure it probably isnt as good as either of them, but for mild use ,mine has been great. No problems what so ever. If im pulling something very heavy or hard I like to use a block.
