Opinions please.

I have an opportunity to buy my Uncles truck. Its a 95 7.3L 3/4 ton extended cab. It has a 135K on it and is super super clean. Garage kept, pulled there travel trailer 3 times, max. All the miles are highway miles. etc, etc.

I need a newer truck bad, 401000 on a gas engine. Cant complain about it never had a major wrnech on it. My concern about the ford is the t-mission. Its the original. I'd hat to buy it and have to drop 2500.00 to get it rebuilt Were the t-mision in this year model strong. What's some of your opinions on this.

i had a 1995 f350, i assume its an automatic e4od your refering to. just my opinion but i don't beleive the trans are bad, just not good enough for the power these engines make.

mine went out at 122k miles, totally destroyed the trans and costs about $2200 to replace, and i nevr towed or anything, just some off-roading and such.

if i were you, i would get the trans rebuilt now and save some money from it destroying itself.

i would buy it and worry about the tranny later. the e4od in my '96 lasted 193,000 before i had it rebuilt. the last 50k of that was running it pretty hard.

Thanks Tim, glad to be here.

I'm trying to get it. But, last night I was talking to a guy who said in 95 the tranny couldn't handle the power so the had the detune the motors to save the transmission. "you'll like the truck, just stay close to a transmission shop"

Get it if the price is right. Worry about the tranny when or if it goes.
Where I live a 4x4 like you just listed gets 7-10 grand so they hold there value well. If it is clean and well kept it could last allot more miles without going south.
Good luck

hate to say, but the tranny isn't that bad, when i had mine i off-roaded and hot-rodded around all the time, plus i had 35in swampers on it also. and i had it chipped and intake and exhaust on it.

as i said before, 122k and the trans went, but it showed signs of distress before it went, i was just to lazy to take it to a shop.

it actually went after i was pulling a trailer with a crew cab truck on it for somebody.

i would get another one in a sec and actually planning to for a second car/off-road toy.

My buddy has a 95 or 96 F250 4x4 with the E40D and he runs his edge chip at 110h.p. at all times, his tranny's great, and he treats the thing like everyday is a burn out competition. I think hes got around 110,000 miles or so.

If you haven't bought it yet, buy it.Half the battle of buying a used vehicle is knowing who owned it and if they took care of it.

the truth is as many have said "its not if an automatic transmission is going to go out its when". at some time every AT will eventuly need to be rebuilt. things wear out. i would say to buy the truck and take it to a transmission shop and have the fluid changed ect. ect. if your worried.

16Diesel this may sound nuts but I had a tranny tech tell me if I had an auto with better than 80,000 on it and it was working fine do not change the fluid????
I would think that an oil change would do it good but he said no something about the old clutch packs don't like new oil maybe some one here has facts to prove or disprove this idea.

this sounds to me like a trans rebuilder being a rectal orifice telling you that cause he is looking for work.

one of the kids at work just sold his 94 E150 club wagon. the trans had a full service every 30k miles after the first service at 35 k miles, when it started to develop a shudder. after the first time, between 30 and 35k it would shudder, so i started him on a 30k change. when he sold it to his brother in law in December, it had 357k miles on it. it now has 403k on it, and is still going strong. as a matter of fact, they left for Florida in it on Monday. both the trans and 5.0 engine have never had any work done to them with the exception of routine maintenance, which is 3k oil changes and 30k tuneups and trans service..

and of all the trucks at the shop, the only one that needed a trans before 200k miles was a chevy Z71 with a 700R4? i think it was.

Thanks for all the replies. Y'all have definatley convinced eased my mind. I'm getting it as soon as my Aunt gets back from Dallas.

GP4, You heard right. I'm a gear head. I did alot of racing when I was younger. I've pretty much done it all. With all the mechanics I know they all say the same thing, never ever ever ever ever ever change the transmission fluid............................................. ............... Unless you change it religously as the mfg. suggest. You change the tranny fluid on a vehicle that has not had it done regularly and you better get ready, its gonna go. I've seen it and its happened to me twice. Since then I have never changed tranny fluid and never had a problem.

What happens is varnish builds up in the transmission. Changing the fluid breaks this varnish loose and ruins the clutches/bands, whatever you call them.

The key to tranny life is the heat of the fluid. My brothers father in law has a 2002 f350 with an auto. Over 300K and he pulls alot. All over the country. No problems yet and never changed the fluid. But, he also never pulls in O.D..
