Odd clicking noise, help!!

about 3 weeks ago i heard what i thought was a piece of metal dragging below my Bronco. looked, nothing there, sound went away. then i noticed right before i came to a complete stop, i'd hear a little rattle in the front end brake area. sound would come and go. then last week after driving on the highway, i slow down to drive around town and hear a constant clicking noise. like the noise that a bicycle makes when kids put a card in the spokes. just constant and it varied with my speed.
let it sit for hours, drive it again, sound is gone. week later it comes back, then goes away.

i have automatic hubs, so i was thinkng that was it. haven't tried putting it in 4 wheel drive yet though to see if they engage. if they do engage, i'm at a loss as what it could be.

also, should i not be driving it around?? worst case scenario can i just loose my whole wheel while driving??

Sound to me like a classic case of auto hub failure. They make the kind of noise you are describing quite often when they are dead or dying. The hubs are designed to engage when rotary force is applied from the axle. The problem is that when they get old or they dry out (they are only lightly greased anyway or they gum up and don't work right) they tend to seize and drag as the wheel spins. It's not gonna hurt anything but the hub itself but it sounds like a good excuse to swap to a good quality manual hub set.
