I have an 86 Bronco XLT with intermitten wipers, the wipers only work in high speed and even that is somtimes slow to none. I have replaced the wiper switch only to find this is not the problem, I have bypassed the intermitten box to eliminate that, I have also dissconected the wiring harness at the motor and hooked from the battery to check the motor but could'nt get a good connection but was able to make the blades move. I have also checked through the forums for this problem but could not find anything. Anyone have any ideas?
Could be the ground. Only the high speed has enough voltage to get the motor to move and overcome a high resistance on the ground. Check your Haynes wiring schematic to see where the wiper motor is attached to ground and give it a good cleaning.
Try dwoodler's suggestion first and if that yields no improvement, the motor itself may be bad. The magnets in the motor are susceptable to dislodging from their mounts over time which allows them to drag on the motor armature and essentially slow the motor down. Eventually the armature will chew far enough into the magnets to stall the motor entirely. This is probably why they only work marginally well even on high. While the wiperes ARE on high, put a hand on the motor casing. It should be warm but if the magnets have shifted, it will be HOT. Keep an eye on your voltmeter or ammeter when the wipers are running. If the gauge shows significant drop in voltage or the ammeter shows significant drain while the wipers are on, this is most likely the problem. I would not normally go into such detail with this issue if I hadn't had it happen to three other fullsize 80's-90's vintage Ford trucks that I had to deal with.
