i have been doing quite a bit of body work on my 93 f-250. both rear fenders were rusted out among other things. for the fenders, i cut the rust out, trimmed the replacement pieces to just bigger than the hole, put the replacement behind the hole, and welded it in. i then ground down the welds so they were flush. next i started layering on the filler and sanding it smoothe. it seems like ive created much bondo work...the rest of the truck went pretty well but this dang bed is giving me a heck of a time. anyone have any pointers to offer? it just seems like the longer i work, the more discouraged i get. help! thanks everyone.

How thick is the filler i was told to not to go over a 1/4 inch at the most. Use a apropriate sandind block for the area. Start out with 36 grit just to knock the area into the basic shape, then refine it with 80 use a strait edge to fing your highs and lows and fill them in and sand them untill you get your area pefect then run ove rit with 180 grit to get all of the large scratches out. Just dont get fusterated by how long it takes to get an area smooth all the sweat and blood will pay off.
When you overlap the panels the bondo has to cover a larger area to hide the joint. Use as long a board as possible to shape the area. I know there are the curves so that is more of a feel thing. Use straight edges to find your high and low spots and add or remove filler as needed. Nice thing about bondo is you can grind it off if you are not happy and start again. It takes time and practice. Keep at it and I am sure it will start to fall into place.
I usually accept that a truck bed is impossible to "cherry" and
accept the good enough theory. To get to the good enough
point I have used paint scrappers, wire brushes on drills and
disk grinders and once and awhile a total sand blast. My last sandblast
was on a small bed ricer and the guy got about 10 Jacksons which I was
happy to pay.
I would be thinking liner or spray on bed before going
the bondo route.
Let us know what you end up doing.
