Well I got my parts truck home and started changing out doors again. Anyway my truck is a 64 (non custom cab as far as I can tell) and the parts truck is a 64 non custom. The bottom hinges are the same, however the top hinges on my truck have the spring to hold the door in place. The other truck did not and they are identical to the bottom hinges. Is this a production year difference, option, or custom cab difference? My 65 has the same spring hinges.
They all had the spring in them. It sounds like the ones you got the spring has been broken out. My brothers 61 had the springs and my dads 66 has them to and my buddies 65 has them as well. It would seem that you need to find a spring or another hing.
I have yet to purchase a slick manufactured prior to 1965 (August 64) with the top spring type hinge.
When the cabs were redesigned with the lower floor the springs were added. the stamping for the pillar was revised with a relief for the spring. This pillar stamping was also then carried over to the four wheel drives and F350s with step type cabs.
Look at the upper hinge pocket on your 65 verses the 64. The difference is clear.
You will also notice that 61 to 63 and some 64s have 3/8 fine thread bolts Mid year 64s and up all are 3/8" course thread bolts.
My 64 has fine thread inserts on the passenger side and course thread inserts on the drivers side of the cab... Go figgure on that one. Built April 64.
My 62 F250 Uni has no Springs
My 63 Pro Street Uni has no springs
My 64 Short bed has no springs
My 66 Crew cab has springs
My 66 F250 Long bed has springs.
Thanks for the reply. The 64 in my gallery does have the larger pockets for the spring hinges, just like my 65. I could tell real quick that the replacement top hinges from the other 64 were shorter hinges and didn't line up. They did not have the spring broken off, it was never made with one. My truck may have just been a late production 64 with the larger hinges. Good to know since I took the 65 hinges to replace the worn 64's. Now I have to replace the 65's. Rob peter to pay paul.
But they look extremely dorky. As the rear cab corner is level and the door is not. Hence that is why ford put the nice body reveal in to level out the bodyline.
I have Uni doors installed on my crew cab, along with new rear doors continuing the body line at the approximatlu 3/8 inch slope. i also dropped the rear cab corners correspondingly. The body line continues with the custom uni bed i made fo it.
wow sounds cool , i like subtle body mods like that . the reason that i asked in the first place was the 62 uni that i just recently bought came with an extra set of doors but for whatever reason they were left behind when the tow truck picked up the truck.( you gotta stay on those guys)
Hi all...been a long time away...I never knew about the thread changes till I snagged a hood hinge off a 64 ...and like all good wrecking yards scavengers...kept the bolts...same as the door ones...didnt know till I got home of the fine/course thread difference...also wasnt aware of the door hinge pocket tweak Ford did...If anyone is in need of some non spring hinges I got some....fine thread too...
