Extang covers?

I've been wanting to get a soft tonneau cover for my 04 F150 that I can easily take on and off and that is pretty durable and waterproof, but also affordable in case I ever have to replace it (from damage or theft). I've been looking on Extang's and Truckadon's sites at the Black Max, Platinum, Saber, and Tough Tonno. I know the Black Max and Platinum are snap-ons. But what's th difference between the two (aside from the metal vs. black rails)? Are they hard to put on and take off? Does water get in?

What's the difference between the Saber and Tough Tonno? I know both have the "smooth" look with the "peel and seal" feature, but how tight or strong is it?

Anybody have any of those menitoned? Opinions or suggestions?

Chris

Hi Chris,

We have several user comments that will help explain the subtle differences between each Extang model, just scroll down on each product page for the model you are researching and you'll see the comments down towards the bottom: http://www.motorhaven.com/tonneau-covers/20A10044A1.aspx

I installed the Access tonneau cover. It has velcro side enclosures with an aluminum frame. It's a roll up type with the cross bars integrated into the vinyl. I've had it on there for nearly 2 yrs and has proven to be very durable. Would definitely recommend to anyone.

Thanks, TBF. I'll check it out.

jlanas, is the cover good at keeping out water? How well does it stand up in windy conditions or driving on the highway?

It seals up pretty good. I've taken it through car washes without any water getting in. It also holds up pretty good in the wind, it has a tension adjustment for the changes in temp (i've actually never had to adj personally) to take up the slack.

To close the top, you unroll and there is an aluminum bar at the end that locks into place at the tailgate and there are two lock clips underneath that prevent the top from opening with the tailgate up. Then you run your hands on the side to seal the velcro.

I know you did not mention this one...but i have the trifecta (tri fold) cover from extang. I love it. You can fold it up in 5 seconds or remove it in a couple minutes. It reinstalls just as fast. I love it.

I have the Extang Black-Max on my new 06 XLT. Looks great, and we've had some monster rain storms, so far no problems.. This has the snaps, with a plastic post on the rail, and metal snap on the cover itself.

this weekend will be the first long distance drive.. 250miles

I have had a Black Max cover for about 1 1/2 yrs and have had no problems with it. It keeps everything dry and I regularly drive at 70 - 80 mph. The only difficulty is that in real cold weather it is tough to snap, but living in FL that shouldn't be an issue.

Hi Chris,
We manufacture a few soft tonneau covers. The Truxedo Lo Profile is our premium cover and the Truxport is the economical cover. The are both roll-up covers. The Lo Profile has automatic tension control, Velcro on the sides, and extra seal around all the edges. The Truxport mounts to the top of the pickup bed, has Velcro on the sides, and manual tension control. You can go to truxedo.com to check out all their features.

Put a BlackMax on my Ranger. Water tight, pretty easy on and off, and looks good too! AND the price was right.

I do appreciate everyone's input. I'm still researching some of the ones you've mentioned...But I know I like the soft, rollable ones in case I need to remove and store it out of the way at any moment, and I think I'm narrowing it down to some low-profile snapless ones...

Thanks again for your input.

I have an Truxedo Truxport. It works great and love how the ribs are integrated with the cover. when you roll it up, the ribs go with it. The ribs are also flat and and dont have that curve that goes upward. The velcro on the sides are ok but I like the seal and peel from Lund. to bad I dont like the looks of it, but the sealing system is great. The Truxport hasnt leaked yet but it hasnt rained too much. I you do get one, youll need to get foam/rubber seal for the front since there is a gap on the front of the bed due to the side bed rails. I think it was the same for my lund I had.

I had a 'flat top' cover before the extang, and got hammered at the airport while I was traveling.. when I came back the top was stretched almost halfway down into the bed, and the braces were destroyed.

I have since made sure to get a curved brace cover to insure the rain rolls off..

I have the Extang Platinum on my 04. It is watertight and looks great. It is easy on and off. The snaps are adjustable for different seasons. No problems to date. It has been installed since January. It moves a little on the highway but nothing to be worried about. Had the truck up to 110 MPH with no problems.

Gotta throw in my two cents of endorsement for the Access Ltd. Today's velcro huge improvement over snaps---ease of which become so dependent on cover's reaction to hot & cold conditions. Access alumnium framing extremely durable and attractive. Side rail installation provides additional---and particularly useful---bed hooks/rings. Cover material does not stretch or shrink in extreme temperatures. Absolutely does not leak. Some posters here, have claimed to have slept under it!
