stalls at idle

Just rebuilt the carb on my truck and it now it has been giving me some trouble. It was ok for the first 6 weeks but now it does not idle well and stalls frequently like it needs more gas. I adjusted the curb idle speed as fast as it would go and it helped some, but it still stalls when at idle. Revving the thottle helps keep it going but not much else. I've adjusted it to run rich and this has helped for a while but it ain't right.

Do you think it is the carb rebuild I did or something else? Maybe throttle plates or fuel pump (new one 1 yr ago) or the points? Also, the carb was never adjusted perfectly..i still had the fuel mixture to get right and the timing to set right.

Oh, i have a 71 f100 sport custom with360, autolite 2100 2 barrel, 4 speed granny.

I believe, but I could be wrong, that there is a separate route into the carb for idle fuel as opposed to main jet. I assume it is running fine off idle? Accelerates OK? Then it isn't the accelerator pump, it isn't a clogged jet and it isn't the fuel pump. If the fuel pump can deliver fuel at acceleration it ought to be able to deliver fuel at idle. Unfortunately you're going to have to tear it back down and look at the rebuild instructions and check the orifice that supplies fuel at idle and see if it is plugged.

That seems like a very good idea and good advice. It might be the throttle plates or maybe the filter is only a little clogged and when I push the gas more fuel comes through.

It may also be that you have a vacuum leak. When your engine idles down and the fuel flow thru the carb becomes less, a vacuum leak presents a lean condition within the carb (too much air) causing the engine to stall...So, you might check all your carb gaskets and vac hoses for leaks...

Everbody says that but I don't know how to check for a vacuum leak. I think i understood you about checking the gaskets and so on but i have to take them off right?

Also, isn't there a way to do it with the speed of the engine. Someone told me to cover the top of the carb with my hand with the engine running and if it sped up then there was a vacuum leak and if it didn't then there wasn't one?

You can spray some carb cleaner around your baseplate if the idle changes you have a vacuum leak. Also works to diagnose bad intake gaskets by spraying it around intake.
