power steering cooler?

I am going soon to pull the needed parts to convert my 68' F100 to power steering and an automatic on the column. I was lucky enough to find one truck with all the needed parts. My question- Do I need to install the p/s fluid cooler that mounts on the pump or was it a needed item of the past? Also noticed some were coils in the front frame rail.

Thanks
Rob

Rob, you will be grabbing the pump, so get it all, including the line on the frame. I understand that by not running some kind of cooling line the pump can be fried.

But the donor, get the Ibeams for the disc brakes.

Rob, I removed the `cooler that was nounted to the p/s pump frame....It was always in my way

I installed the `tube` type cooler that mounts down in the frame rails. I cut the tube ends to fit and re hosed it to the pump.

maby it will work for you...

power steering cooler?

Rob, I converted my truck (66 Fe352 C6)a couple of months and about 1000 miles ago. I used the small cooler attached to the PS Pump. I have seen many conversions on these old Fords without any PS coolers whatsoever. I do think a cooler is necessary, but I don't think you need both the frame tube cooler and the pump mounted cooler. Personally I like the pump mounted cooler it looks neater and was easy to install. I was also considering a remote oil filter set up bolted to the frame rail. This would provide additional cooling (through the filter), a little more system capacity and cleaner oil for the pump. I may still try this but the small cooler is working fine for now. The hardest part of this project was getting the PS gear installed. I used a nylon strap and friend on the top and a floor jack on the bottom. Consider rebuilding the steering gear box before you install it cause once you get that big box installed you won't want to take it back out. Please keep us posted on your progress.

William , I can ditto that. I have had to pull mine three times since Jan. and that aint a job to look forward to. It makes it a lot easier if you have someone to get the first bolt started for you.

I made the mistake and wanted to put new seals all the way through. DO NOT DO IT!!!!

I need the pump part for one now, the part that bolts to the steering column at the rag joint, and connects with the four bolts to the gear.

Well I pulled all of the parts nedded for the swap. I still have to go back to grab a perch and the brake pedal. Need to find a ford pump dipstick and pulley. Any leads? I have looked through 4 yards and 50+ trucks. For now I am cleaning and rebuilding.

John- You need the rag joint coupler for the pump? I have two now and can only use one. Ford box? Let me know.

Rob, your brake pedal will work.

You are backing up my theory of purchasing your donor, and getting all the parts from one place.
