I have a 98' Ranger and every time I get into the truck and go to start the engine, I have to press the unlock btn. on the alarm remote before the ignition will start the engine. This happens even if I don't arm the system in the first place. Is there a way to program the alarm to bypass this feature?
Keep in mind that the '98 PATS system pre-arms itself whenever you (1) press the lock button on the transmitter, or (2) open a door, press the power door lock button, and close the door. After 30 more seconds, the system is fully armed. An armed system will be disarmed with one of these valid actions:
1. Pressing the unlock button on the transmitter.
2. Placing a key in the door and turning to unlock.
3. Turning the key to RUN or ACC.
So it sounds like your PATS system is not functioning correctly, since turning the key to RUN or ACC in your case does not appear to be disarming the system the way it should. This could be indicative of a problem with Remote Antitheft Personality (RAP) module that controls the PATS.
FWIW, the RAP module stores diagnostic trouble codes whenever there is a problem with the PATS system. Unfortunately you need a Ford NGS scanner (dealer or qulaified shop) to pull the codes.
