I've got another first-time job to do...replacing the seals on the rear diff. I have a 54 F100 with what I believe to be a Dana 44\3.92 rear gear and need to change the pinion seal. It looked as though the gear oil was being slug onto the underside of the wood slats as the drive shaft spun.
Is this job fairly straight forward or will I need to get a diff. housing spreader in order to get the center section out of the case to get to all of the gaskets and seals?
I've looked at the picture books but have never torn one down yet.
thanks for any advice and Happy 4th to all.

You don't need to take the differential apart to change the pinion seal. You just got to take the pinion nut off and the yolk. Pry out the old seal and put the new one in. Then put the yolk back on and then the nut. The hardest part is getting the differential to stay put while you get the nut off.
