I Am driving a 2001 Ranger, I keep getting a check engine light. took it to Advance auto and had them check the code, said it was something to do with the EGR system. Put on a new EGR Valve. check engine light came back on with the same code. any Ideas?
Probably the DPFE Sensor. For explanation click this link: http://autorepair.about.com/cs/generalinfo/l/bl470g.htm
Before you replace the sensor disconnect the two rubber hoses where they attach to the metal tube going to the EGR valve. Then start the engine and see if you can feel exhaust gas pulses coming from both tube attachment ports. If not, "gun" the motor and recheck. These ports can get stopped up and cause the same codes as a bad DPFE sensor. You can reset the "check engine light" by disconnecting cable to the negative (-) battery terminal for about 1/2 hour(maybe less).
Kinda sounds like a DPFE problem to me too, it's common on a Ranger EGR code & seeing as how you've replaced the EGR valve without sucess, it's even more likely the DPFE imo.
There is a exhaust gas port in the manafold, below the EGR valve, thats often missed, that can clog up from carbon, that'll cause problems too, so keep tat in mind, if you had lost of carbon build up in the old EGR valve.
BTW if you still have the old EGR valve, keep it for a spare, as it's likely still ok.
I have just went thru the whole process myself. Before buying anything, remove the egr tube and thoroughly clean with solvent and compressed air. There is an orifice in the tube between the two hose ports that must be clean. If that doesn't do it, buy a motorcraft dpfe sensor. (check millenium ford http://www.discountfordpartsaty2kford.com/)
The danger in buying cheaper aftermarket parts is if the part you buy is bad, you will keep replacing unneccesary parts trying to fix it. Another free thing to check is the foam filter on the vacuum solenoid. Unsnap the top and clean the foam with solvent and let it dry. If it is dirty, it will throw the p0401 code.
