Disabling Wastegate

I noticed a few people are disabling there wastegate. What does that do? Don't you need it to regulate some of the back pressure.

If you just unplug the red vacuum hose you shouldn't have to worry about any thing.

With it unpluged you produce more boost.

The wastegate has a vacuum actuator. There is a spring in there as well that provides tension to the actuator arm. The vacuum relieves some of the force applied from the spring allowing the wastegate to open. With no vacuum the full force of the spring is holding the wastegate shut. Thus delaying its opening and producing more boost.

IMO unhooking the wastegate shouldn't hurt anything.

I keep mine unhooked and have shortened the actuator arm abit.

I hope that wasn't too confusing.

do you have to plug the end of the red hose you pull off or just leave it tucked out of the way. does this make a bigger whoosh noise when the wastegate finally opens? thanks

You should plug it, a handy place is one of the intercooler clamp bolts, perfect place and size, just like someone at FOMOCO planned it or something . The one thing you have to watch for is if you overboost, you get a ChecK Engine light that goes away after a few minutes. You probably won't see it unless you have a tuner, my DP chip will throw one right away. I did it, didn't notice any change to milage, but your truck will give you more seat-of-the-pants accelleration when you are into it. I didn't notice any more woosh, but I have an AIS so I already get LOTS of Wooosh.

You'll get faster spool up since the wastegate isn't being opened by the

pcm. The pcm starts opening the gate around 5psi. Shortening the actuator rod

will increase max boost. You should pick up a boost relief valve or regulator to

prevent throwing a code and having the engine defuel.

Keep in mind that this stuff will shorten the life of the turbo bearings and will

result in an earlier rebuld of the turbo. You won't see the full potential of a chip

unless u mod the turbo somewhat. I have my turbo fitted with a larger

exhaust housing to compensate for uneven drive pressures on the bearings.

I beleive Kwick had an issue with his machine after disabling it and he thought about plugging it back in. Cant readily recall which thread, but if I find it, I will report back.

Are you talking about the red hose that is next to the green vacuum hose?

That's correct...the red hose connected to the canister is a pressure hose.
Kwik reconnected his because of what happened to Chad(Cat_man) and his
turbo leaking oil. Chad eventually invested in a Garrett GTP38R BB unit .Amongst other turbo goodies.

Yes, very confusing! Why the shortened arm if the line is disconnected. Does it still actuate even with the tube disconnected????

Bear with me, I'm still new to the PSD's.....

Shortening the actuator rod puts more tension on the spring inside the cannister
which keeps the wastegate closed longer.

But, does the wastegate still actuate with the tube disconnected? Does it open just because of the boost pressures?

Yes...dependent on spring tension. Some folks just adjust them so they don't open period.

Gotcha!

How will this affect the life of the turbo? Will it affect it because of the unequal pressures on either side of the housing?

Correct....the journal bearings will wear out sooner....but it may take awhile. It's only about $125 to rebuild the turbo provided u damage nothing before rebuild.
This is why the ball bearing unit is superior in dependability under higher boost pressure(upwards of 40psi sustained).

I shortened my Wastegate rod and left the red line plugged in. My rod is pretty tight,i actually thought it might be too tight but with the line hooked up i can still set the CEL. 24lbs of boost for about 20 secs and the light will come on,without the line hooked up i can hit 27-29 depending on load. I did notice about a 50* increase in EGT when i hooked the line back up though.
