Ok I may get called stupid for this but I would rather have that be than be the bbq. My idea is to take one of them propane torches and hook hose up to the intake for propane injection. So I would be running that black fuel hose from the intake through the firewall to the end of my bernzomatic tip so i can manually control the propane flow into my intake. I think it would work in my head but when i think that way nothing ever does, so if someone knows why this wouldn't work or if it does work please tell me, thanks.
I did a test with propane using a BBQ tank and a regulator off an oxy acetylene torch.
I also used a toggle switch and a 12 volt solenoid to control the flow of propane.
Manual control was a pain since you constantly had to switch it on and off.
My parts list was basically what was listed on Zigsters page.
BBQ tank
Dual stage regulator
Wire
Switch
Hose
Brass fittings
1/4" copper tubing to make the nozzle with
I had all of the above laying around in my garage.
The only piece I bought was a 12 volt solenoid valve that was for a propane fueled forklift that cost 47 dollars at the local propane dealer.
My test was set more toward improving the fuel mileage than it was for power.
It was something I will probably do in the future, but since I have a dump bed on my truck I am going to have to wait till I can get a frame mounted tank before I do it.
The frame mounted Manchester tanks are over 300 dollars.
The problem with a bernzomatic torch is the fact the tip mixes air with the propane before it gets to the tip. With any restriction at all I see you filling the cab up with propane which is not a good thing.
Also I have a turbo so I was probably running more propane than you could on a NA motor, but there have been a couple people in here that did report good findings with NA motors.
Hey Dave, scope for some of the dual fuel buses, they may be able to set you up that way. A friend of mine has a tank, but it would hold more propane than you would need, in that you would have to put in many tanks of diesel to use it up, about 100 gallon I think it was... big ol monster. Under a Ford bus, no less....
Propane is a touchy thing, and regulating it is the trick. Also, be careful on that kind of thing, if for some reason something were to go wrong, or a wreck, that kind of setup would be very bad news... if you made it through, you would likely have some legal issues to tend to...
If i were to do this would i see an increase in fuel mileage? And i would remove that upper tip that screws off on the torch, the lower part above the threads has two small wholes that i would put the tubing over, i will more than likely spend the money to do it the smart way than the cheap way, cause if the shortcut was safe it would just be the way. Thanks and i was also wondering do you know how much better fuel mileage i would get or how much better did you see? Would it be worth it for the fuel mileage?
