rebuilt c-6 slipping?

Hey all,
The tranny died in my 1980 F-150 4x4. Truck has a 302 and c-6. I came across a rebuilt c-6 for a good price, but it had been sitting for a while(apx. 6-10 months). There was some minor surface rust on the governor/collector and stator support but that cleaned up quickly w/wd40.
I removed the pan and checked the filter and it was all clean. The guy supplied a used torque converter that has a high stall speed. I had the rebuilt tranny swapped for my one a week ago and am noticing a few things.
First, it seems to be slipping throughout the gear range after driving for a while.
Nothing major, it just doesn't seem to "grab" like a transmission should. Second, after running the truck in drive for a while, the slipping is a bit more noticable. Again, not major but more noticable. If I shift manual, no problemo.
Could it be the used torque converter? Or maybe because the tranny sat around so long? Should I put another filter in it? The guy that did the swap is an ASE mechanic, but he only drove the truck long enough to make sure it shifted. No around town driving etc.

Any advise on this one?

Thanks as always,

Dave S

Sounds like it might be misadjusted as far as linkages. Are all the shifts the same as far as hard/soft, early/late? While the "new" tranny was sitting did it have fluid in it or was it drained and dry?

drained and dry. It had a bug in the pan when I removed it for inspection, but that was all. The shifts feel consistent.

BTW, I gave the bug a proper burial.lol

I also forgot to mention that when I put the truck in gear (R, D, 2, 1) I get a good "clunk" as if its engaging fully.

I agree with checking the linkage. Also, you may want to pull the valve body out and make sure no valves are sticking. Even when re-building, you have to be carefull to seat the valves just right so the dont bind. A little rust can go a long way in fouling up a valve body. The C6 is notourious for making a clunk in reverse. I woulnd't worry about that too much.

on the off chance that there might be a bit of rust fouling up the valve body, is there any easy remedy? Tranny flush or fluid change? Big hammer?

remove, tear down and clean thouroghly, thats about the only remedy. You could just hope it clears up but most likely by the time the valve body cleared up the clutches would need replaced.

aww fooey. Oh well, I only need something to get me from point a to point b while I rebuild the original. I guess I'll deal with it for the moment. Summit will be shipping my tranny o-haul kit and new converter this week

Thanks for all replies

you said it has a rather high stall speed on the used converter. what is the stall speed?? it is very possable there is nothing wrong with the trans, but the converter is bypassing because it has not met the specified lockup speed.

my friends 68 big block camaro race car has a 5500 stall converter on a turbo 400 trans. the trans will not even go into gear till you are reving at least 3500prm. it is a bitch to drive onto the trailer. either no go, or launch it off the other end .

I think its a 2800 rpm torque converter. It was fun getting used to it, the first day or two I had the truck back. I liked watching the tach race towards 3000 before it actually shifted.
I think I actually watched my fuel guage drop towards "E" in almost direct proportion to the tach. The truck was only getting a little over 10 mpg before it went into the shop

hmmm, wonder if the valve bodies are interchangable between a 1980 c-6 and a 1987 c-6. If they were, I could essentially swap them out and if the tranny ran better, theres my problem.

The forward clutch seals are what went out on my original

just tossing it out
