Bad news!!!!!

hello everyone,
here's the deal:While driving normally good oil pressure no overheating,a big clatter from the engine, stooped the truck and it died out engine locked. I took the valve covers off and on the left bank first intake valve the spring came off while unbolting the rockers, the valve retainer cup was worn and the valve was free-wheeling with the piston ( I guess that was the clattering noise).I have not taken the cylinder head off yet but I imagine the piston must be shot.My question is "Almost all the antifreeze ended up in the oilpan, what would be the cause of this?"

Thanks,
saigon

A hole in the cylinder wall, blown head gasket, cavitation, head cracked........????????

Drain the coolant from the oil pan........ASAP

if the valve was dancing with the piston, there is a good chance that a piece of the valve broke off and punched a hole in the cylinder and piston.

Found the culprit!

The engine is still locked, I suppose the rod is bent.

What does the bottom of the head look like?

Look for cracks very carefully between the cylinder and any water passages or the adjacent cylinder.

Funny looking mark at the 5 o'clock position and the 6 o'clock position that could be a crack or just an oil smudge.

Well I got the other head off and was able to turn the engine about a quarter turn, the block is shot, two big gaps on both sides!I found two engines, a 6.9 that I will be able to see and hear running since its still in the truck and a 7.3 which is sitting on a pallet. Will keep you posted.

Talking 7.3l

Ok, I found a 7.3 from a E-250 1988 Econoline, looks good, only 145000 mile on it, I am going to get it next week.Looking at it the glow plug controller doesn't at all look like the one I had on the 6.9, where do all those wires go to???They all end up in a flat black rubber female plug and I dont have the equivalent male plug on the 6.9, anyone have diagram?
saigon

I had a manual switch on the 6.9, Dave I am sure you call tell me how to wire that 7.3 !

You could swap in the 6.9 harness and run some extra wires to the new controller.
You could also swap the 6.9 harness and leave the manual control glow plugs as they are now.
Or you can use the 7.3 engine harness and splice it to the 86 chassis harness.

I did a combination of the above.
I used a 7.3 harness and spliced it to my 86 harness and stayed with manual glow plugs using the 86 relay.
I will have to dig through my notes, but I have the wire colors that go together here somewhere.
I remember that I was only concerned with the IP power which powers the timing advance and cold engine high speed idle as well, that wire is red with a green stripe on both harnesses.
I also hooked up the oil sending unit even though I have a manual gauge, I think that wire is white with red stripe, but I need to find my notes.
The temp gauge I also hooked up even though I have a manual gauge for it as well, that wire changes colors from what I remember.

You will also have to swap out the oil cooler, the oil filter slants the wrong way on the E series oil cooler.

I will have all this found shortly, I am going to be reinstalling my engine tomorrow if it stops raining long enough for me to finish reassembling the engine today. So far it is not looking to good on that count.

6.9 to 7.3

Thanks for all the pointers Dave, good luck with your engine! Here in France we are in a drought, regularly 30-35 degrees centigrade and no rain in sight, alot of sweat to swap engines! Will be watching my mail for you answers.I have a manual temp gauge, mechanical oil gauge and manual GP bypass button which I would like to keep. What is more of a concern is the IP advance and the cold idle.

Swap your 6.9 harness onto the 7.3 engine.
You have all the extras that I would recommend already installed.
The only advantage to swapping harnesses would be using the new style glow plugs.

The red with green stripe wire is everything you need to run the engine and operate the IP FSS, the cold advance and high idle solenoid.
