Hi. I got a '96 F250 4x4 with the Powerstroke and E4OD tranny with 76k miles. When shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear under moderate throttle, the transmission just slams into gear. Does this sound like just an adjustment is needed or will I need some high dollar work done? From what I've heard, the E4OD wasn't the best transmission, although I heard it did get better nearing the end of its run.
Also, are there some mods available for this tranny that will extend its life? I already got a TS Performance chip which I believe was susposed to increase line pressure in the tranny. Also have an oil cooler. What exactly is the Banks Trans Command?
If worst comes to worst and the transmission blows in the future, I wouldn't mind swaping it with a C6 with an overdrive unit. How hard a swap would this be? Would I be saving money over rebuilding the E4OD?
Sounds like trans may be in Limp-in-Mode. Remove & reinstall #9 fuse under the hood. It's a 20 amp maxi fuse. If trans shifts better then your due for some tranny work.
Search this site for trans you'll get a wealth of info. Not sure about the swap to a c6 but someone will chime in soon to let you know.
If you have a flashing light on the overdrive cancel switch you need to clear your codes. Cycle the OD to make sure that the light is working. I have a 94 that mysteriously does this from time to time. Sometimes simply turning the engine off and restarting will fix it. Scanner will say no current problem and clearing codes fixes it. I suspect a harness problem but haven't pinned it down yet.
How's it shift w/out the chip? Higher line pres. will firm them up. The prob I see w/ the c6/od combo is no lock-up converter.I'm no trans man but,you could just have a prob w/the 2-3 accumulater

The trans shifted hard from 2nd to 3rd even before the chip, under the previously mention moderate throttle, but since I have some more power now, I tend to notice it more often.
sticking valve int he body or perhaps a clogged port. See if you can find a shop to do a GOOD trans flush. My 01 did the same thing, had a little build up. 80 bucks for the tranny flush here at Precision auto, they even pulled the cooler OFF the truck and made sure that there was no restriction. Filled her back up and never have had that problem since. It helps though when you find a place that has a profound spot in their hearts for diesels like we do.....
