Mass Air Flow Sensor

I have been told to clean the Mass Air Flow Sensor on my 03 F-250 to possibly help with fuel mileage. How should this be cleaned. Bob

I have used brake cleaner many times on my Ranger MAFS. Just be sure to not blast the filament too hard as I have heard they can break. I did mine a couple times a year (lots of desert trips) and never broke the filament.

There is a special cleaner for MAF sensors now. I've always used brake cleaner or carb cleaner.

Great Leaping Lizards Batman! I cleaned my MAF today but first happened to notice on the internet that a replacement part (in case I screwed it up) seems like was over $450.......

At least this answers one question I had, namely what is this sensor made of - The answer is money!

You can get a replacement for $180 or less. Used ones for really cheap on ebay.

Just spray it down with cleaner, it won't break unless you touch it.

MAFs have come a long way since the day of sneezing and braking the MAF filaments

These MAFs Ford uses are pretty stout. Still, be VERY careful...

Did you have P0171 or P0174 dc codes which lead you to the Mass Air Flow sensor problem? Did cleaning it help, did it resolve the problem?

CRC makes a MAF cleaner. Look where the carb cleaners are in the auto parts store. Just tried it last week. Part-throttle response is better now.

I took the sensor out to clean it and it still looked brand new. I cleaned it anyway and my fuel mileage still hasn't improved. I have also changed the plugs and air filter. Any thoughts?

A dirty MAF will usually make the engine run lean, getting BETTER mpgs.

It's usually not the other way around.

I'd check the O2 sensors - as they age, they read lean so the computer goes rich wasting gas.
