My brother has a 86 f-250 4x4 with a carburated 351 in it. For some reason no one sells a fuel sending unit for it. It has duel tanks and I need both. The fuel pump is on the motor not in the tank. Everything I find is for a in tank fuel pump or for electronic fuel injection. The truck is new to us but I think the motor and everything is orginal.
I wouldnt go with a used tank sender. They all go bad. I went with new from FORD and have not regretted it. Replaced the front tank unit first, then saved loot to buy the rear one. They are pricey.
try going to these two places rockauto.com or lmctruck.com both have a very large selection of parts and i believe that they have sending units but each will cost you about a hundred bucks.
Check eBay Motors auction, I found a similar one for my F350 several years ago for around $35 including shipping. Various sending units for '80-'86 Ford trucks show up occasionly--you just have to be patient. I really helps if you have the Ford part numbers because many sellers don't know what their items fit. Here is a sample from an EBAY Store: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/SENDI...72003275QQrdZ1
This link may be too long to transfer so go to EBAY motors ans search "Ford Sending unit".
I'm not sure, so don't hold me responsible for this, but I think the version for the external electric pump has a fuel return line that can be capped off if not needed.
I just was going on the mounting flange for the pump... can't answer on the 2 line vs 3 line. The in tank setup on my 92 was only 2 line, the vapor canister line was run into the tank vent valve.

With an engine driven Fuel Pump I would think a sending unit out of an older truck would work, say a 1983.
Also note that your Fuel Valve on the frame switches you fuel gauge also and it could keep you gauge from working on one tank or the other.
I think a lot of these poster are thinking an Electric Fuel Pump/Sender unit.
The trick to the older senders is that they have a smaller diameter hole in the tank. The 85 model year uses the same size hole as the in tank pumps so that the tanks are universal, but the sender is different in regards to the mounting or not of the fuel pump. The engine driven pump sender is a lot like a diesel sender, but still different, as the sump pickup on the diesels is different, and go figure, it tends to disintegrate. One of the senders like the ebay example could be modified and used, or take the sender resistor assembley off and transfer it to the original mount. It's actually pretty easy, done it myself several times.
Autozone, advanced and napa all had the mechanical type when i was looking for the electric pump type for my 84 (small hole) I could not find the electric type.(even ford could not get it) There is a company called s.u.r.&r. in akron oh that can rebuild your sending unit. I think they charge me 80 or 90 bucks and had it done overnight. they have a web site.
