The easiest way to tell a 203 and a 205 apart:
On the rear of a 205 centered between the rear output housing and the front drive section, there is a small (2- 2.5") round, 3 bolt cap. Here is a really greasy example of a 205

Like SwOkcOffRoader said, the shift **** is different, and that is a 203.

Well 600 if you were closer I have 4 NP205s I would sell any of them with an adaptor for $100, add another $75 and I would even through in a rebuildable C6 (add a couple hundred and I would rebuild the C6 but thats another issue) they are plentiful and easy to come by, if you don't already have one. If you do have one and that extension housing is what you need surely someone could yank one off and sell it too you if you can't find one in a junkyard or don't want to go looking. BTW 2 of the np205s I have came out of 77 F150s with 351M in them, so that is definatly a possibility that you already have one, and personally for what an extension housing would usually cost just finding a good tcase probably is the way to go.

Smile T-case

One of the ways to ID an NP 205 is the ALUMINUM cap at the top. Some are/have been converted to 2-stick. Popular to "rock crawlers".
VERY GOOD pic's. Suggestion: state "Looking forward."
Hobbies include "photography" - ( ocassional Freelance )

Ok, so I see from the pics of the 203 and the 205 posted, mine looks just like the 203.
I tried to post a picture of mine but not sure how, maybe someone could tell me how. MIne is aluminum, and it was stated in an earlier posts that 203's are Aluminum and the 205's are cast. Also my shifter **** is like the one that 460 posted a pic of but the words are are on a single vertical line.
I can definitely see where I'd have to change the driveshaft if I went with the 205. From what ya'll have said, my choices are ebay, junkyards, 4X4 magazines, and links on the forums.
Since it is a 203, what transmission case would I have, the only number I can find on it says 11865? BTW, the only number I can find on the extension housing is C-11923.
Would it be the C6 like I"ve heard mentioned here. Because another option ya'll have was to get a new t-case also.

THanks
600

The trans case does not change due to tcase, just the adapter between them. If you have an automatic then yes it is most likely a C6. you wouldn't change the entire transmission, just the short piece between them.

The swap fron 203 to 205 is very expensive and complicated.
I've tried doinging it, and it just wasn't possible with my funds.
You have to swap adapters between the t case and transmission(which isn't to bad, but you have to swap transmission tail shafts too, b/c of the different length adapters, and messing with automatic transmissions is out of my leage.) Then new a shifter, linkage, driveshafts, and you have to get a new mount and drill new holes for the mount to bolt to the frame.

You do NOT have to swap trans tail shafts you just have to get the right length adapter, there is only 2 tailshaft lengths for married tcase type transmission, and there is 2 different length adaptors (if you need one I have both the long and short adaptors here) the side support mount is easy, it's just drilling holes, the shift lever you should be able to get when you get the tcase and or adaptor the only issue is the driveshafts and even that is easy because it was a factory option so they are available, or getting current shafts lengths isn't too expensive.

600 Nitro. If you have a 203, I have one outback that I can pull the extension housing from and ship it to you. I will never use the t case. I have a 205 in my truck with two spares. Let me know if you are interested. If you are interested I will look at it and send you a picture of it if you want.

monsterbaby, the short adapter is for the 203, and the long adapter is for the 205.

I tried to swap the 205 and adapter to mine, but the tail shaft wasn't long enough.
I tried using the 205 and 203 adapter, and I would of had to cut off the crossmember and make a new one for the front driveshaft to have any kind of room to go to the front axle, and I didn't feel haveing someone make me a new crossmember.

I run a C6 with the short tailshaft, and adaptor factory crossmember in a 77 F150 frame and it fits just fine. I also have another short adaptor that has a np 205 hooked to a C6 factory from another 77 F150, it is a factory option not all of them came with the long adaptor.

There are 2 different adaptor lengths and output shafts between the C6 and the 205. I'm not sure if this is the same with the 203 though.
