just like to say that i am new to group, and am the proud owner of a completely original 1971 f-250 ranger xlt camper special. the old girl has 39000 documented miles on it. has 360 w/4 speed, ps,pb, and air. the ac is still cold. body and paint is perfect two tone Lt green and ivy green. has been sitting in garage since 1991 when previous original owner died. all it has done its entire life is pull a 26ft travel trailer. has factory gauge package, dual tanks, and even cargo light. bed is perfect with ford rails still on it. having some engine trouble due to it having been setting so long, but am hoping for help here. so far I have $1000 dollars in it. Thanks for keeping the old fords alive and running on your sight. they just dont make them like this anymore!!
I thought I was doing good when I got my '71 F250 for $750, but she needs lots of work, mostly cosmetic, as the 390 power plant and C-6 tranny seem to be in great shape.
Great find for you, though. Welcome to the boards.
I would replace the gas tank first and foremost (LMCtruck.com, $200). With all of that sitting time, you surely have rust due to condensation in the gas tank, and that may explain your engine troubles. Of coure, replace all fuel filters (at least once). If you try filling the tank, it may leak out of the rust holes and ruin your interior carpeting, too. Since you'll have the seat out anyways to do the tank, get it recovered and replace the carpet/mat at the same time. It is another $150 for a carpet, or $100 for a rubber mat.
i have already replaced the in cab tank, rebuilt carb, new fuel pump, and all new fuel line. now i have a clean fuel system at least from that tank. factory carpet doesnt look like anyone has ever stepped on it, and factory seat cover has one about three inch rip in it right on drivers side edge where you slide in and out. for now i am content to stick with the originality of everything. this thing is completely original with 39000 actual miles on it. the bed and tops of bed are perfect, with original ford rails on it. top edges have never been drilled for anything. first thing is replace points, condensor, wires and plugs, but i am in no hurry. just a little bit at a time, and i am doing it right as i go.
Sounds like a really nice truck, nothing like a clean one owner with very low mileage.
I bought a '72 very similar to yours less the AC (I really wish mine had factory air). Mine had 32k miles on it and a 390 C-6. Mine also sat covered since '91.
Hope you enjoy your new truck; we just use ours for hauling the ATV and towing our travel trailer.
Others here are replacing the ignition setup with electronic sets (ie. Petronix et al) and having good results....I am considering it myself. Look through the old forum titles.
