I recently bought a used 1993 explorer (160,000 miles) and the person that I bought it from says that for the past several years, they've had to add oil every 1,000 miles. They had mechanics look at it and nobody can explain why it's eating so much oil (it's not leaking out). Has anyone heard or have experience with this?
This is my first post...so I apologize if this has already been discussed several times !!
If it's not leaking, then it must either be going out the tailpipe or into the cooling system. Have they checked for signs of a blown head gasket? Also, check the PCV valve. With 160k having to add a qt every 1000 miles isn't the worst thing in the world, especially if it's not leaving spots or smoking real bad.

While I agree it's going somewhere...it really should be investigated. A qt/1000 miles is a lot to just disapear. Mine's got nearly 180K miles and it burns a little but only about 1/2 qt each 5K oil change - doesn't leak a drop.
Had one doing that and it was weeping oil into the lower intake manifold, fixed that and away went all the other vacuum and fluid leaks.... 2.5-3hrs to change out the valley gasket.
Thanks for all of the ideas, I will print these suggestions out. It's strange because previous owner took it to a Ford mechanic and they were scratching their heads. I'll post my findings. Thanks all !!!!
