I blew a tire on my 84 F350 crew cab 4x4 srw the other night and after alot of cursing figured out that my left rear wheel uses left handed lug nuts. I was wondering if this is stock or was something swapped by some po. I believe the rear end is a D61 or D70 id #'s aren't readable.
F-350 SRW's of a certain GVWR used Left handed lug nuts on the left side.
F-350 DRW's also use Left handed lug nuts.
It's to keep the lug nuts from loosening up, under weight. The spinning of the wheels going forward, on the left side, will tighten up with left handed lug threads, whereas if they were right handed on the left side, they would tend to loosen up.
All heavy trucks are like that.
Even saw a Ford Courier with that type lugs on it.
Ok, Thanks. I had seen it on drw trucks, class 8 trucks and old cryslers were that way, just hadn't seen it on a srw ford before.Should the left front be left handed too? They weren't even stamped on the lugs, made for a bad time changing a tire at 2am(made worse by not having a spare)

Yeah when I first got Barney and couldn't get drivers side rear wheel off even with a big snapon impact, never knew they had LHT lucky they didn't break off.
Make sure the kid at the tire store knows that before you let him hack at the lug nuts with an impact wrench. I learned the hard way on my '82 E-350 dualie.
My 86 f250HD had them on the front left wheel and it took me about a hour to find that out after breaking sockets and a breaker bar, I think the wheel studs must have been change by the previous owner.
