Left hand lugs

I blew a tire on my 84 F350 crew cab 4x4 srw the other night and after alot of cursing figured out that my left rear wheel uses left handed lug nuts. I was wondering if this is stock or was something swapped by some po. I believe the rear end is a D61 or D70 id #'s aren't readable.

Yes it's stock.

F-350 SRW's of a certain GVWR used Left handed lug nuts on the left side.

F-350 DRW's also use Left handed lug nuts.

It's to keep the lug nuts from loosening up, under weight. The spinning of the wheels going forward, on the left side, will tighten up with left handed lug threads, whereas if they were right handed on the left side, they would tend to loosen up.

All heavy trucks are like that.

Even saw a Ford Courier with that type lugs on it.

hope this helps,

Ok, Thanks. I had seen it on drw trucks, class 8 trucks and old cryslers were that way, just hadn't seen it on a srw ford before.Should the left front be left handed too? They weren't even stamped on the lugs, made for a bad time changing a tire at 2am(made worse by not having a spare)

It think they should be, but they are not. The Front is Right threaded, and the left rear is left threaded. Why it's not marked I don't know.

Here's some information on Wheel lug torque according to the 1981 light truck specification manual. It shows right and left handed lug threads.

---------------

F-350, E-350, 4x4, 4x2, Single rear wheels.

Front wheels and right rear:

Thread size: 9/16-18/Right Handed
Torque Range: (N.m: 156-237) Ft. LBS: 115-175
Nominal: (N.m: 196) Ft. LBS: 145

Left Rear:

Thread size: 9/16-18/Left Handed
Torque Range: (N.m: 156-237) Ft. LBS: 115-175
Nominal: (N.m: 196) Ft. LBS: 145

------------

F-350, E-350 4x2 with dual rear wheels.

Front wheels and right rear:

Thread size: 9/16-18/Right Handed
Torque Range: (N.m: 237-353) Ft. LBS: 175-260
Nominal: (N.m: 298) Ft. LBS: 220

Left Rear:

Thread size: 9/16-18/Left Handed
Torque Range: (N.m: 237-353) Ft. LBS: 175-260
Nominal: (N.m: 298) Ft. LBS: 220

-----------

Hope this helps,

Make sure the kid at the tire store knows that before you let him hack at the lug nuts with an impact wrench. I learned the hard way on my '82 E-350 dualie.

My dad's first 84 250 has left hand threads, and he is the only owner of the truck... However, my 86 250 does not have it.

My 86 f250HD had them on the front left wheel and it took me about a hour to find that out after breaking sockets and a breaker bar, I think the wheel studs must have been change by the previous owner.

It looks like this must have been a early 80's hit miss type thing, my 84 250 didn't have these.
