I have a '96 with the 5.8 and its alright but according to the factory specs I believe you get peak torque at 2500. Thats kinda low aint it? I've never had a 4 wheel drive so thats prolly about right for low end pulling power. I figured it would have more ***** on the highway if I got a cam that put the rpms higher up like 3000. What do ya think?
To tell the truth, I don't think you should just put a cam in it for better performance.
If it were a older model truck pre 80s, then there are no computors, and the upgrade wouldn't confuse the computor.
Also all ford engines make peak torque at low RPMs, and peak HP at around 4,500 RPMs or so.
for as heavy of a rig these broncos are you gotta have the torque building lower. now you could take and install some 1.7 rockers and upgrade to a 56mm bbk throttlebody and headers and bassani Y pipe with hiflow cats and 3" exhaust from there out and see a big improvement over what your currently feeling. plus those mods will not affect the computer especially on your rig

Ditto to what has been said already. The weight of the Bronco especially with the added weight of the front driveline requires peak torque at lower RPMs just to get it moving. If you aren't getting peak torque that soon, with the way the truck is geared combined with the preprogrammed parameters for the transmission shiftpoints in the computer, higher RPM's will serve about one purpose... reduced fuel economy, something these rigs don't need ANY help with anyway.
Well I was comparing the seat of the pants feel as far as flooring it at about 65mph to my dads '95 F-150 extended cab flare side 2wd with the 302 and his seems to have more oomph on the highway. Does the 302 get its peak torque at a higher rpm? I figured they weighed about the same.
Like kemical said, the 302 makes power at higher rpms, mostly b/c they were originally a car engine, and didn't need alot of torque to get them moving.
I'll never know why Ford put those car engines(302s) in their trucks.....
his truck has dual exhaust, 3.55's, and tires are like 255/60/15. I have bassani y pipe and 40 flowmaster with mandrel bent tail pipe,a k&n drop in filter, 3.55's and 31X10.5 oh and 176,000 miles not sure his milage. How close is the weight between these 2 trucks? One more thing I really want to get headers but keep talking myself out of getting them because I want the bassani ceramic and they're a bit pricey. Will I notice a big gain and if so topend or low end?

shorties will give you bit of top end. jba, gibson, edelbrock,BBK also make a ceramic coated header that is great quality. Bassani's are the best but not neccessary
93-98 351w make 310 ft/lbs @ 2800 rpm and 200hp @ 3800rpm
88-98 5.0L EFI make 270 ft/lbs @ 2000 rpm and 200hp @ 4200rpm
-HO make 300 ft/lbs @ 3000 rpm and 225hp @ 4600rpm
check the specs on your stock cam, and the ones off a mustang HO cam.
