End play?
Got an 88 150 4x4, 4.9. I have the tranny and drivetrain off. took the fly wheel in to be turned and the guy noticed some scrape marks on the front of it. He told me repeatedly to check my bearings and that there can be no end play. I'm assuming he's talking about the main bearings on the crank. I'm also assuming that you can get to that by dropping the oil pan (which is the next project --- bad seal).
My question is what is the best way to test this? I'm guessing it would take quite a bit of pressure to move anything even if it was bad. Before I took the truck off the road I noticed it would drop a tablespoon of oil when I parked it. Don't think it was leaking while driving... no smell and no considerable difference on the dipstick. Thought it was the rear seal but after getting it apart and looking at it I think it's the pan seal around the crank.
Any advice, pointers, etc. is greatly appreciated.
Thanks
There is always some endplay. The main bearing that controls the thrust is the fifth one back from the front. You can just pry the crank for and aft with a screwdriver to check the end play. Measure it with a feeler gauge. .004" to .008" is the spec for my 86. If you have a book for your year, take a look to see if it's the same.
Think I should change the rear seal since I'm there or it ain't broke don't fix it?
