Excursion brake pads

Richard,

thanks for the exc info.

I'm pretty sure you've installed PFC Carbon Metallic pads as PFC no longer makes the Z-Rated pads for the Exc. In my Expedition, I'd installed the Z-Rated pads and braking was significantly improved. But I have not tried the CM pads so I can't compare the 2.

I'm about to replace pads on my Exc, either the PFC CM or Hawk LTS. Any comments on comparing those 2 pads? FWIW, my trailer weighs about 7000lbs.

Thanks,

Sam

I ran the PF's on my X, then changed them out for Abex pads, good bad, didn't care for the PF's.

Sam, Mine are the Carbon Metallic and work well. I have no experience with any other Pads for the Ex. Your 7000 lbs trailer should be no problem if it has working brakes.

Thanks, Richard

Thunder,

could you elaborate a lil? what was better esp in cold stops?
I don't mind noise nor dust if it stops better.

I'm fairly similar w/ Hawk pads having used lots of HPS, HP+, Blacks and Blues
(obviously not on Exc :-). Just ordered HPS for the wife's minivan. Never heard of Abex so I can use some details.

Thanks.

I believe they equaled in stopping distance but the Abex didn't seem to chew up rotors. Abex is primarily in the heavy truck brake business but does offer brake pads for lighter duty trucks. Abex is owned by Federal Mogul.

Your comment about the hydraulic brake booster is interesting. Are you saying that the gassers are harder to stop, then?

I have a 6.0, and I don't find the brakes a particular problem... but they certainly arn't stellar. I chaulked it up to the size of the vehicle... but it sounds like the price of the upgrades arn't bad (compared to many other upgrades).

Vacuum Boosters in the V-10's put out less braking force than the Diesel Hydraulic Boosters. As a Retired Ford Powertrain Engineer I can tell you that the Transmissions and Brakes are beefed up on the Diesel Trucks. Some owners overload them with Mini-Car haulers, Large Horse Trailers, Large Cargo Trailers, etc.

Are you basically saying, that in addition to the stronger brakes, the Torqueshift transmission is stronger in the diesel trucks --- or is that only true for the old 4R100?

The Torqueshift is a level above the 4R100 (previously called "E4OD"). Its the 4R100 that had a Diesel version with 4 pinion Planetary Gears vs. 3 in the gas and heavy duty Clutch Packs and a different Shift Schedule to reduce Slippage and a Unique Torque Converter. As I recall there were also Needle Thrust Bearings vs. Bronze Thrust Washers.

for the sake of closure...

the brakes on my X felt like the pads/rotors were glazed. It just glides, no bite,
no grip and no confidence whatsoever.

When I removed the pads w/ 50K miles on them, they were almost the same thickness as the new Hawk LTS pads. Obviously they didn't wear much. After a few stops during the bed-in process, the glazed feel went away. Now the brakes have excellent initial bite, slows progressively and will stop on a dime, well ok, maybe a quarter.

Great forum, thanks.

the good old feel of stock pads and rotors. give you the white knuckle treatment on a panic stop. don't know if it is going to stop.

Richard, In your previous post, you mention getting these at Advance Auto - online only. Advance Auto Parts web site, right? I'm on there today, for this vehicle (unless the 6.0 has different offerings) there are a couple offerings from Bendix, including ceramic and Friction Master, p/n CMX824 - not much description or images on these though. These the ones you got, or am I looking in the wrong place??

Mine is in for some other warranty work now, I know they don't cover pads, but should turn the rotors for me, and I'm gonna ask if they'll put non-OEM pads back on if I provide them. Doesn't hurt to ask, right?

Found them at AutoZone online?

I guess I just found them after posting the above - AutoZone though, not Advance online. Both sites make you put in a zip code before searching for parts, so maybe that changes what parts come up?

Anyway, at Autozone found the following:
