This came straight off of the Crane Cams website. Maybe it would be helpful.
How does Advancing or Retarding the camshaft's position in the engine affect performance?
Advancing the cam will shift the basic RPM range downward. Four degrees of advance (from the original position) will cause the power range to start approximately 200 RPM sooner. Retarding it this same amount will move the power upward approximately 200 RPM. This can be helpful for tuning the power range to match your situation. If the correct cam has been selected for a particular application, installing it in the normal "straight up" position (per the opening and closing events at .050" lifter rise on the spec card) is the best starting point
I would start with the timming chain. From the factory it came with 8 degree retard built in to help smog testing. If you get a pre 72timming chain then you would be fine. Some people say as much as 35 hp with no loss in milage and some has reported in incress in milage.
Hey folks, I installed the Ford Motorsports timing chain and gear set straight up. It did not help with the timing but the response seems better???? I drilled 1/8 holes in my primaries and after readjusting the carb my manifold vacuum is up to 10 and my timed port vacuum is 0. The engine is running better. Still considering a new distributor. Thanks for all of the help with this.

You still have problems, 10" of vacuum is too low. (Unless you live at 10,000ft elevation) I still don't think you have a distributor problem, man them Ford dizzys are bullet proof. Did you double check the firing order? There are two plug wires that if crossed will cause the thing to run like heck and still act normal. I think it was the 7 & 8 cylinder, but I am not sure. I would recheck the plug wires and do it twice. It happened to me and I went nuts trying to figure out what the heck was going on. Good luck on you search -Gary
If I remember correctly his duration at .050 is 244. That would cause low vacuum. If you know how to get into the distributer and weld up the advance slot the Duraspark is good. If not the MSD is easier for the more novice.

Your idle emulsion mixture is probably off to. One sniff at the tail pipe might leave you with burning eyes your to rich or too lean. Fixing that issue is more complex and is tougher to reverse.
