79, 400 fuel problem. help please

79, 400 fuel problem. help please
I put an edelbrock intake and 4 barrel carb onto the motor last year. It was running really rich so I put some smaller jets into the carb and have not had that problem since.
Now for the problem that I am having. I decided to upgrade to an electric fuel pump. I went with a 4-7 psi pump first and that was to weak, It would idle fine but as soon as I got on the gas it would die. So I went with a 5.5 to 10 psi pump and it now runs just fine.
The problem that I have is when I go off roading in the mountains. I was heading up, it wasn’t to much of an incline, and the truck died. I could hear the pump trying to pump but there was no fuel up at the filter. I then tried to take the cap off , still not change. The truck was leaning a little to the passenger side. It had a full tank. I tied to hook up the mechanical pump, as it is still on the engine, but was still unable to get fuel up to the carb.
I ended up having to push the truck backward down hill to get to flatter ground to turn around and go home. I have never had the problem since but I have not gone off roading because I am worried that it will do it again. <O

Where did you mount the pump? A electric pump should not be a problem. Look over the rubber and steel lines for cracks - expecially along the frame and around the tank. The frame flex from the incline could've opened a crack that sucked air - but then closed when no load on frame. I've also seen the pickup tube in tank get rust holes, so the pump would suck air when there was plenty of gas in tank. Just throwing out some ideas, hate to see you stay home over this...
