I'm new to Ford. My son and I both just bought used Exp. His is a 98 Eddie Bouer 5.4 and mine is a 2000 XLT. We're both very happy with the vehicles and the only problem I've encountered is my Overdrive light is always OFF. The overdrive itself works fine so I don't know if the light is out or what. The light did work when I first purchased the vehicle.
Does anyone have any info on how to check and/or change the light on the shift arm.
Does that Mean it says O/D Off (Illuminated)?? It's on the Shift Lever... Otherwise a Dark Lever (No Light) is normal... Overdrive Enabled is default... It lights up when you turn O/D OFF to let you know
I'm almost certain that it would be part of the entire shift lever. I don't think there is a lamp that is replaceable in there. It's not affecting anything though right?
If your positive that it is shifting down out of O/D, then it sounds like a bad lamp. I accidentally broke the cap off the end of my shift lever (you can pry it off if you are careful) and you can pull the O/D switch out. The lamp is a part of the switch. Not sure what it cost to replace. If you break the plastic clip thingies when you pry the cap off, you can super glue it back on like I did mine....
before you go doing what the guy said above me, talk to a ford dealer about a replacement part. I don't think they even sell the switch separate. Like I said, I think it all comes in the lever, and if you want more problems, you have to take out the key lock cylinder and remove the upper steering column shroud to get to it.
99Expy may be right....don't know if you can get the part by itself....if not, maybe check a junkyard? Having to replace the whole shift arm doesn't sound fun. The part you'd need has the button on a base with 4 brass prongs and the light built into it......
Well, it depends on what you consider to be difficult, you have to pull the ignition lock cylinder, and then the top cover on the steering column, and then you have to remove the gearshift lever pin and Ford recommends you replace it. (WATCH OUT FOR THE AIRBAG! disconnect the batter for at least 30 minutes before starting!)
Ford charges about $60 to change the lever, but I don't know what the part costs. Sometimes it is better to just call them and get an estimate before you find out if it is worth your time and aggravation.
If you need a shift lever i can sell one to you. I got one with the steering cloumn when i had to buy a new lock, cylinder, and housing assembly when somone tried to steal my truck without knowing it was PATS equipped. Just send me a PM if you want to buy it.
