Leaf springs

On my 1998 f-150 my bottom leafs on both sides seem to have shifted sideways about half the width of the leaf itself should i be conserned> I am in the process of remodeling a room in the house and need to haul the old lath and plaster away. a lot of weight. i drove to work today with it loaded (not full) seemed heavy but not squirrly should i try to reset them a little advise would be appreciated thanks Rick

I would be worried. Something is not right. Not sure if you can reset/recenter them.
Would hate to be driving the truck when/if they let go.

Myne did the same thing, im not sure why but they havent gave me any trouble for almost 4 years now. I dont haul a ton of crap but i have been known to some random heavy crap with no problem.

would it help to realign them and tighten the u bolts?

I would. Loosen the u-bolts enough so you can move them easily, check to see if there is anything broken, missing plastic parts or pins.

if your going to loosen your u bolts you might as well replace them, because they are more vulnerable to breaking once you remove the pressure on them. But thats just somthing i have heard time and time again, never actually had them break.

It is important to clean the threads well and and retorque to specs. I think the breakage factor is from people who tighten them down as tight as they can get them and then give them one more turn.

fell asleep one morning going down a road in my 92 and creemed into and out of a ditch and the only thing that happened was the rear leafs were like that buy more like an inch out, didnt noticed any handling problems, but now that i think about it i left a trailer atached over night and the next morning it rear axel was on the bumpstops, so it might just give you some over load prootection
