In the past 4-5 days, my 2000 Ranger XLT, 3.0L, std 5-sp tranny, 119K miles, started a noticeable engine knock under load. I'm current with all recommended maintenance. I filled up with 87 octane yesterday (same Exxon station for most of this truck's life), and today, the fuel gauge is showing a half and 3/4 after going just 28 miles. I'm connecting the knock with this, and I suspect water in the gas. Anyone got an idea?
Did the octane booster after running the half full tank down, and filled up with Shell 87. It worked! Thanks all, I really appreciate it. My little buddy Ranger thanks you, too!
Good info about Top Tier. The nearest Shell to me is about 12 miles (I live on a farm). But, I've noticed the same tanker with the name of the local gas distributor seems to stop at all of the convenience stores and major gas stations around here, including my regular Exxon, and the local Conoco, Phillips, and Citgo. The only brand at the distributor's yard is Texaco. Suppose the same gas is going to all of this places?
Conoco and Phillips are also providers. Keep in mind the tankers have separate sections inside them. It may come from the same "warehouse", but it isn't necessarily the same thing at the pump.
Here in Wisconsin the stations have to buy a certain amount of the gas they are branded for (Mobil, BP, Shell) each month, but once they reach that percentage of sales the state says they can buy whatever brand they want. You never know here later in the month if you are truly getting the brand that the sign says. A couple of the stations in my area are owned by the local Mobil distributor, so at least I know I am always getting Mobil there. Can't say the same about some of the other stations.
