I have read numerous posts about chips/programmers and I am thoroughly confused. I have a 2001 with the V10 4X4 with auto trans, 33x12.50x16 tires and 3.73LS axles. I rarely tow anything larger than a full size ditch witch and only locally. I would like more pep and firmer shifts while still running 87 octane. Any suggestions?
yes go back to the stock tire size those are kiiling your power.
down to brass tacks thou, first you need to regear for those big tires to regain what you lost, 4:30's would be ok 4:56's even better , then find a sct dealer near your home and work out some custom tunes to fit your driving style and useage .
try www.sctflash.com type in your zip code to find a dealer close by your home or contact the site web master for a custom tuned sct excalibrater 2 not the dealer stock universal one that can be had the over the counter one. the custom works out better all the time as it's tunes are custom for you and your personal driving towing

Yes! that is on the to-do list... was thinking of 4.30's but I may put on 35" tires one day so 4.56's should be better! I guess I should move that to the #1 spot and throw in a GOOD limited slip to boot
I have played with a couple of different chips. Running on 87 octane is going to be hard to gain anything at all as the number one way chips up power and mileage is to advance timing. Mine will run all right on 89 octane but will ping easily on 87 while running a chip. Pinging reaches its peak at high rpm.

it's not only timeing that gets moved up with a tuner there can be many other viables used ,and it possible to tune a motor and still run 87 gas. this is why the the excalabrator2 custom tuned is the best for a gas ford motor.
plug and play units work but with universally used tunes .that cause you to need high blends of gas

Couple of suggestions...
If you're going to go to 35's, and want to tow ANYTHING, you might want to consider 4.88's...
As to the limited-slip, I'd go Auburn ... and eventually I probably will. The Auburn in my '96 t-bird 4.6L 8.8" rear is amazing. Stock break-away torque on the Traction-Lok is about 20-25ft/lbs. The Auburn in my t-bird, way over 150ft/lbs. I could jack up the rear of the car, leave the tranny in park and remove and re-install the rear wheels without breaking the limited-slip loose. Try that with the stock Traction-Lok
However, ARB air lockers may be an even better alternative.
Depends on what you want the limited-slip for - off-road use only? Or do you want to be able to actually move in low-traction situations in 2-wheel drive on the road?
4.88's..... man the gas mileage would really SUCK! HA HA! I have read about the Auburns and they sound good as does Detroit's LS with the gears instead of the clutch's.
I had the air lockers in my Jeep YJ and the are the BEST! but complicated to install, I will consider them for the front though or maybe use the electric lockers in both axles. All this will be future stuff to do as I need to get some kind of 4" lift first.
One thing about the Ford modulars that I've noticed, and had reinforced talking with people on this site.
When re-gearing, and running at higher RPMs, the modulars don't lose MPG, and in many cases, GAIN mpg. Less load on the motor, slightly more RPMs, seem to make the modulars use even less gas, or at the very least, remain the same.
i can back him up i went from 410's to 456's and did pick up 1 mpg . mostly as my engine is more into the torque band , as to rpms at 75 i'm only turning a little under 3k still below peak torque listed by ford which is 3250 or about for a 05 and 90 mph is 3300.
Tell me what yall think of this.... I have only had this truck a little over a month now, just changed the plugs a week ago also. anyway running 87 & 89 octane I would get some pinging when giving it some gas. I thought it might be the MAS needed cleaning, but today I put the Premium 93 octane in it and it goes like a scalded dog with NO PINGING?
Could it have already been programmed or chipped & how could I find out? It's Funny how going from 89 to 93 octane could make that much difference.
your truck could have been reflashed, no real way to tell other then how you have pings on lower grades runs like a raped ape on 93 so my bet is that it's been flashed and the tune left it. i would simply leave it alone. at least till you know what you want to do.
as to rear gears 56's should be more then enough unless your going super big tires .
iknow some in v10 has a chart that helps what gears to pick may he will chime in and help out
Yes I am leaning toward the 56's since I may end up putting 35's on but no larger.
Thanks for yall's assistance! If ya have any Plumbing related questions ask away
