96 PCV Location?

Lookin for the PCV valve on my 96 351W...Haynes sez it's either in the top of the intake manifold or the oil filler cap (makes sense!). I see a hose coming out of my oil filler cap, but doesn't look big enuf to accomodate valve..anybody know location for sure?

thanks all, can't tell you how much i'm learning from this forum

I don't know for sure about the '96, but they're usually somewhere between the hole in the valve cover that does NOT have the oil filler cap (but the valve covers are identical, so the hole is in the same location on the valve cover) and the upper intake manifold/plenum. Imagine taking off the valve cover with the oil filler cap and flip it around to put it on the other side. The PCV valve will be between where the oil fill hole lands and the plenum. Earlier models put the PCV line into the back of the plenum, newer ones may have that line going into the plenum at the main vacuum tree (top center of the plenum). So, look for a vacuum hose that goes to the top rear of the passenger side valve cover.

thanks for the info...i wound up strapping on a pair of kneepads and climbed up into the engine compartment to get a good look...eventually traced a hose out of the top of the intake manifold that ran between the engine and firewall and found the PCV valve attached to it back there....what a adventure to find/replace this thing! design flaw, IMO.

while we're on the subject, mr. haynes also sez the 'PCV filter' is located in the air filter housing. Not on the 96! So where the heck is it?

The PCV filter should be attached to the other end of the hose that comes out of the oil filler neck, and I've never seen one anywhere else other than in the air filter box on a Ford truck. If it's not there, then it may just be missing.

The 96 doesn't have an independent PCV filter like the older trucks do because it is mass air. All of the mass air trucks have the crankcase vent attached to the filtered air stream before the throttle. This is because the computer must account for the air entering the intake manifold through the PCV valve, thus, the inlet must be sourced from metered air.

The F250HD and heavier trucks still used the old system in 96, so maybe that is what the listing is for? I couldn't say, but there isn't a breather filter on mass air trucks.
