351 mod motor question?

Okay, Im looking at a truck and the guy said it has like 351 motor but its a mod 400. I saw an article on here that said 351/m400 or something like. Is this a special motor or something. What kinda horsepower do these make. Any info that will clue me in would be helpful.

What truck? Any other specifics would help...

The 351/400 modified motors were nothing special - they're basically the same engine but the 400 is basically a stroked 351...same heads and other parts. Don't let the name modified fool ya....

You're in the wrong forum. The 351M and 400 share similar architecture to the 351C, but have a bellhousing pattern that matches the 429/460 transmissions. They are not "Windsor" engines. From the factory, they were always emissions engines, and were fuel-slurping dogs. However, they are basically a tall-deck 351 cleveland, which many consider the best performing common ford engine around... With a few basic tweaks - Edelbrock performer intake, four barrel carb, RV cam installed straight up and headers & duals, they can be great engines.

I do not really know a whole lot else, but hopefully someone will if this can get moved to the proper area.

The 400 motor was introduced in LTD's in 1971. The 1971 400 was a decent motor and was a tall deck version of the 351C, except it had a 'big block' bell housing. The compression ratio was reduced from it's original 9.0:1 in 1971 to 8.4:1. At some time along the way the cam timing was also retarded 4 degrees. This was all done for emissions purposes, and it did affect the performance and fuel mileage of this motor.

Even with all that, in stock form the 400 is a good truck motor, putting out massive amounts of torque at low RPM.

Today there are many modification options available which will turn a 400 into a real monster.

First are you sure that it is a 351M/400 motor.

In a 1986 truck, it should be a 351w, not a 351m. Lots of people make that mistake.

Count the valve cover bolts. The 351M/400 motors have 8 on each cover. I think the Windsor motors have six bolts on each cover.

4.11's and 4x4 will make any engine suck fuel.

Engine Identification (rev):
======================
351C/M/400 335 series: 8 bolts in rectangular valve covers. Timing chain housing is part of block. Thermostat housing on block. Exhaust bolt holes diagonal.
351M/400 335 series: intake is 12.7" wide the 351C is narrow.
351W/302/5.0L 6 bolts on trapezoidal valve covers. Thermostat housing on intake. Exhaust bolt holes horizontal.
429/460 385 series: 7 bolts in rectangular valve cover
352/360/390/427/428 FE series: Intake goes under valve covers.
-There are other indicators but these are enough to distinguish engine families.

My '73 Galaxie with a 400 gets 5 mpg thanks to a blown exhaust valve.
