Cell phone

So what's your personal policy on driving while talking on a cell phone?
I saw an accident yesterday and it got me to thinking. I talk on mine allot while driving. I have been known to use a laptop too!

I don't think it is a problem if you can talk and pay attention at the same time. Ihave had a bunch of people pull out in front of me while talking on a phone and those are the type that should not. Allthough I believe a hands free device is the way to go!

Personally, I try not to do it in the citys. Out on the open highway, even though your doing 70 to 80 mph, there is not as much to watch for as in the city, so I don't see it a problem there.

In the city, I never make a call unless it is an emergancy, such as calling 911 the a few weeks ago to report an accident that I didn't have time to stop for (on my way to a job interview). If someone calls me, I usually try to keep the conversation to a minimum or pull into a parking lot.

Personally, I have only had one near accident while on the phone, and that was just Friday. In Andover, I was pulling out of the Dillon's lot and pulled up to the road. I looked right as I was approaching and saw no one, then I looked left and saw traffic approaching from 54 hwy, I had a small window to go, so I did. Just after I had commited myself, I saw a red mid 90s Crown Vic trying to make a left turn (from my right) into the driveway. I had already commited since I was in the northbound traffic lanes, so I just floored it and cleared them as fast as I could. Now, I did not see the Vic because it was behind the A-Pillar of my car, but if I had not been on the phone, I might have looked more closly.

I also nearly had another accident that same day that was not my fault, also involving a cell phone. A women talking on a phone pulled out in front of me in my pickup. I evaded and my left rear wheel came within about 6 inches of running over her frontend. That one spooked us a bit.

I don't like the idea of legislating no use, but folks need to be extra careful if they are going to use them in the car. My wife said Fort Riley requires a hands free device and will ticket for using a phone without and driving.

Cell phones are probably not a lot worse than adjusting a radio, putting in a CD, eating, drinking, smoking or beating the kids while driving. If you are going to do it you need to extra alert.

I used to only have my cell phone on and with me if I was going out of town. I have considered geting an external antena and a hands free head set. I don't get many calls and am more likeky to have the computer on with the GPS than talk on the cell phone.

I usually try not to use the cell when I'm drivin in town and if I do I have a hands free set. The laptop is another thing, when I run diagnostics I usually have someone else drive, if I were to get in a wreck I don't think the cop will buy the "I was looking at the MAP sensor" bit lol

I usually don't use mine much and try not to be distracted when I do use it. Most of the time it's just the wife and heck that is not distracting I just have to say uh huh once in awhile. LOL

They don't bother me when used once in a while. But when you are following a b bopper and you watch them talk for a while, end the call and then either text a message or search for the next person to call, then I have a problem because they are not in driving mode but phone mode.

I try not to use mine in the city. But I get so few calls that it really isn't a problem for me. As far as other people go, I really don't care. I try to keep an eye on other traffic around me anyway and if they are on a cell then I just watch them a little closer.
