built a cowl induction hood for my 75 today it cost me a factory 79 hood that i had laying around, $10 for 4'x5' sheet of steel and 68 cents for a sheet of poster board i'll try to post some pics later , it didn't turn out to bad for a first timer at hood modification.
it is functional i cut a 20''x 42'' piece out of the hood leaving the stock hood bracing then i starting drawing a stencil out on the card board once i got it the way i wanted i traced it onto a piece of sheetmetal and cut it out that got me the sides then i used those right angle magnets to hold the sides in place while i folded the piece i cut out of the hood over the sides that way i kept the factory line down the center, i also made a frame out of 1/4'' steel rod to support the the sides and top, im working on helping the air into the carb but im so over welmed by how cool it looks it might take me a while.
Holy cow that's a big hole. Nice way to keep the shape though.
I made mine from a piece of sheet metal I got off an old office desk. I used a steel rod about the diameter of a pincil for the hump down the middle. I cut one of those plastic bondo scrapers to match the original hump and used body filler to fill in the rest.
Your idea would've been easier.
Look in my Truck Mods gallery and you can see what I did for the air cleaner. I cut two 4" round holes in the hood and made a box/tubes to get the air into the top of the stock air cleaner cover. Not the mose elegant, but totally functional.
Sounds nice. Personally, I would have gone with a Cobra or Mustang scoop and made an air box for the carb and have ram-air injection. ( kind of like a mild supercharger at highway speed ) A "flange" on top of the box will mate to the hood and can be sealed with soft rubber like what is used under garage doors and such.
what should i put on the side of the scoop (decal)
that is a real good idea of having an airbox on the carb i will have to experiment and look around for a while to see what i like.
I thought of the forward facing scoop, but they're not really practical for dusty trails and/or mud and water holes. That'd be worse than the stock horn on the air filter.
I made mine to keep the fan from blowing water into the horn on the air filter. There is a shield in front of where the tubes meet the hood, and a foam gasket sealing both tubes to the hood. The only way to get water into the carb now is to spray it in there from back. and even that isn't easy.
I thought of putting a "460" decal on the side of the scoop, but I'm not a big fan stuff like that. Maybe a very small "cowl induction" sticker would be cool.
