Starting A 54 F100

I'd like to start my 54 f100 6 cilynder before I yank it out to re do it. I will be converting it to 12v at that point. How can I and how would I wire it to start it on 12v? Thanks for your help.

You'll need a 6V battery, if you have and old, I.E. 1950ish farm tractor you can rob the battery from it. If you're going to convert it to 12v you'll need to have the starter motor rewound, or by a 12v unit. You'll need a 12v generator and ruglator, or alternator, most people use an AC Delco one wire unit. The rest is just replacing the gauges or putting the appropriate sized resistors on them.

If you are just looking to start it, I think you would be able to jump it with 12v with no problems, the starter is pretty robust and will actually spin the engine over better on 12 volts.

I did it on my 6v positive ground hudson and it had no ill effects, although it did have a 6v lawn mower battery installed

I have my 54 mercury car converted to 12 volts and have been using the 6 volt starter with no ill effects. I've done this for at least 5 yrs.
