Encrypting back up disk?

How would I go about encrypting the disk I use to back up my computer? I tried downloading encryption programs but that only seems to work on the hard disk itself. I was told when backing up my files to keep a copy in a different location than my home, just dont want anyone routing around in my biznass. Thanks.

What kind of disk? Generally, with any type of WORM disc, you need to encrypt the data before it gets writen to the disc. Try WinRAR and use the encryption or a program like cryptext.

Anything like that I just lock up in my safe or briefcase. If someone wants it bad enough to physically break into my house and commit an outright act of theft they are running a gauntlet even if I am not home.

As far as keeping copies away from my home - NOT HAPPENING!

My home is my hard site.

That is the way I always felt about it, but other factors come to play like fire and whatnot. I am thinking about just buying a 1 gig flash drive and zipping everything up onto their, and the security is already on the drive. That way it can come with me anywhere and can be locked up in a safe deposit box or something. I already have two 256 mb drives but they arent big enough.

Bank box, one big enough to hold CDs cost about $100 a year. My thing is not so much the private part, but, losing it entirely. What you can do is .zip a file without compression (store) and then use PGP on that. What you do not want to do is .zip a file and then PGP it because one bad bit and the file is history. There are many bad bits on a disc platter, your HD just automatically corrects it. Same with removable media. The problem is, nothing is perfect 100% of the time. Make allowances.

Use pgp to encrypt whatever you want, and then burn a CD or DVD out of it. Then store it in a safe place.

Zip file password protection is very weak and be cracked quite easily. I've done it.
