Posted this on the Expy forum, but thought I would post it here as well. I drove to the store and everything worked fine. Got ready to leave the store, started up and the shifted into drive, but the shift handle went all the way to low. I moved it back to drive, but there seemed to be no resistance until I got it to drive, then it would not go any further. I went ahead and drove home and everything went well until I got home, but it would not shift into park. I had to leave the key in the ignition since the shifter would not move into park. I do not know if the cable has broken or what? Any ideas/suggestions?
Well in my 93 bronco there was a type of cheep metal tube in the column that had cracked and caused what you describe. I was able to crawl under the truck and shift it by hand till I could get it fixed (very unsafe). I'll look into my manual, chances are the design has changed a little.
Ok, well first thing to check is the cable, make sure that it hasn't just disconnected from the tranny and the shift arm at the base of the column. If all is connected try to move one end and see if the movment is transferred to the other end correctly. If the cable movment checks out to be fine start looking at the tube in the column; If the gearshifter moves and the arm on the other end doesn't do the same you've found the problem. In the Bronco it cracked into two pieces but it might be as simple as something just comming loose.
Thanks. I got under the truck and checked to see if it was connected there. It was. I had my wife move the shifter up top while I looked underneath, no movement. Makes me believe that either the cable is broken or the tube that you are talking about. Any idea the cost?
Could not find anything loose under the dash, and after reading my Haynes repair manual, the only thing that I could find on the cable was the replacement of it, and it referenced the steering column shift tube. Is this somenthing that is user replaceable, what is the cost if anyone knows, and do you have to replace the column itself?
Took it to the dealership this morning, had to have it towed. They seemed to know what it was right away, told me it would be out today and under $200. Will let you know if this is what finalizes.
On the vans (99 & 02) I drove for work plus a '96 Bronco, the same problem was fixed by tightening a couple of bolts under the dash, on the steering column. Ten min. fix standing on my head under the dash.
