My CEL came on yesterday, I borrowed a Auto Xray 2000 from a friend and got:
Trouble Code P0171 "bank 1 lean"
Pending Code P1131 "lack of H02S1 switches lean bank 1 sensor"
I presume the 1131 code is more indicative of a bad O2 sensor, especially if it is ust the one side. I don't want to spend the money if I don't have to.
This is on my '98 Explorer w/4.0 SOHC @ 116k on the odom
I did a search and found that most of the time the P0171 also comes with the P0174 which indicates lean on both banks.
Very well could be manifold gaskets. Sometimes it sets a code for one bank only. Do a search for manifold gaskets. You'll get plenty of info. TSB-00M12 This is not for sure your cause, but it is good to know about.
kit number: YL2Z-9E473-AA Includes gaskets for upper and lower man., chain tensioner, restrictor, plug, tensioner seal. About $35.00
Well, I did not see this one coming. A while ago, I went to change the spark plugs and had a hard time figuring out how to get the back two on the passenger side and so did not change them. I was getting the codes before I figured out how to do the back two and have not had a code since. I figured if they were firing, it shouldn't make a difference. The plugs I pulled out were ridiculous, I can't believe they were still working. I bought the rig with 114K on it and I am certain after looking at the plugs that came out of it that they were the originals. Anyway, to sum up, bad plugs can apparently make the O2 sensors throw codes if all plugs are not changed at the same time.
