I have an '85 F-150 4WD, with AT and a 5.0 out of an '84 Mustand GT with a fresh rebuild. With 33x12.50x15 tires and 15x10 aluminum wheels.
I was going up the road the other day when I noticed that when it ****ed into drive there was nothing there. After playing around with it I noticed that at high rpm's it was almost trying to pull in drive, it was like it was in passing gear or something like that. I was told that I needed to either change it or get it it rebiult that the drive gears where out of it. It never did make a noise or do anything to make you think that there was someting wrong. And beat it all, I had just had up the raod earlier that day with no signs what so ever that there was nothing what so ever wrong with it.
Anyway, the local tranny shop here wants $450 to $550 to rebuild. And I know that a rebuild would probably last another 10 years or so, but I thought I'd try something first. I recently purchased an '82 F-250 3/4 ton LWB, 4WD, and AT with an 351W down in it. It has been setting around for about six years and they had lost the title to it. I bought it for the body parts because most of them are pretty dog gone good shape and I can use them on my '85 F150, the motor needs a little work done to it too, and then off to the local scrap yard.
My question is - Will the tranny from the '82 F250 work in my '85 F150? I was told that even though they are both mounted to small engines that they were somehow different.
The engine bolt patterns are the same, so the trannies are interchangeable. There may be a discrepancy with the flywheel weight, but someone else may be able to clear that up.
I dont think anything as long as they are both c-6's use your torque converter and flywheel, and will bolt right into place with no problem. 500 is a good rebuild price..
Before changing or rebuilding transmissions I'd look for small problem areas first such as loose/misadjusted linkages or a bad vacuum modulator or maybe even changing the fluid and filter. You might even consider trying an additive such as Lucas or other major brand in case its a valve sticking.
The tranny you have come from a mustang? Is it a C4 or and AOD? The F-250 probably has the C6. The C6 would be a better option, it is definitely a beefier transmission. The other 2 can be built up quite well though. The C4 would have a removable bell housing, the C6 would not. Both are from smallblocks, and are interchangeable. I think you need to use the C6 flywheel and Torque converter. The trannies might be different lengths, you could grab a tape measure and check it out. If you have the AOD, you will be losing overdrive going to the C6.
No, I'm sorry the tranny in the '85 is not from the Mustang it was in the '85 when I done the engine swap. It's a C6, but it's not the original C6. It had to be replaced when the guy that I hired to do the engine swap for me broke the bellhousing trying to force the engine and the tranny together, well that's another long tale, maybe some other time. I've bought a new filter and some tranny oil, two new seals - front and back. I fiqiured that I'd do some preventive maintenence before putting the older tranny in. Is there anything else that I would need to do?
Well heck a C6 is a C6 as far as I know unless it has a different bell on it. I would compare the flywheels and T/C. One may be different as I am not sure how the 302 is balanced compared to the 351. good luck.
